“Dear PoP,

We would love if you would help draw a little attention to our 5% Day at Whole Foods this week. At all three stores on Wed. the 15th, 5% of sales will directly benefit The Farm at Walker Jones, an emerging urban farm serving the great kids, families and neighbors of Walker Jones Education Campus, a DC public school.

Our farm is huge by school standards, and was launched as part of larger school wellness initiatives for our school population. 100% of our kids receive free meals here at school, and we want to help both the children and the families realize that sound food choices are accessible to all.”

Old City Green is having their 2nd Annual Lamb Roast to benefit So Others May Eat (SOME) on Sat. Sept. 11th from 6-9pm at the corner of 9th & N streets NW. The suggested donation is $22. They request that you RSVP by this evening.

“Dear PoP,

I’m a producer for the DC Chapter of a national art project called MORTIFIED. We’re gearing up for our next show (November 10) and are currently looking for submissions. I was hoping you could help us get the word out. Details below:

Mortified is a comic excavation of adolescent writing, art and media.
Hailed a “cultural phenomenon” by Newsweek, Mortified is a comic
excavation of the strange and extraordinary things we created as kids.
Witness adults sharing their own adolescent journals, letters, poems,
lyrics, home movies, stories and more!

The Washington, D.C. chapter is looking for new material … that’s right … you know you wrote
some lame ass stuff in school. So did the people behind Mortified.
And they want you to join them. Dust off that diary! Whip out that
Trapper Keeper! Mortified DC is actively looking for new participants to
join the fun. If you or someone you know would like to read aloud
utterly embarrassing childhood relics in front of total strangers …
we’d LOVE to hear from you. Open to anyone from actors to
accountants. Must be 21+.

After the jump – tonight’s fundraiser happy hour. (more…)

“Dear PoP,

I live in Petworth and am currently raising money to fight breast cancer. I’m hoping you could give my blog www.dulcedelecheracing.blogspot.com a shout. We’ve all heard about the Breast Cancer Walk or Swim or Triathalon or Head Shave or Whatever. But I like to mix it up. I’ll be participating in what is quite possibly the world’s largest all female off road race in, dare I say it, the galaxy. It sure as hell isn’t yo mama’s Race for the Cure. The race will be in Barstow, CA in October. Last year we raised over $3000 and came in 3rd in our class. We race a class 5 unlimited baja bug. It’s basically a VW bug that has been tricked out to an inch of its life. There are many other classes that participate in the race, from the big monster Trophy Trucks to the little bitty stock VW bugs. Yep…I said stock.”

Sounds cool. Good luck!

Based on yesterday’s comments – welcome a new PoP feature, The 5pm Post. It’ll change every week and per your suggestions will be a mix of philanthropic or simply fun things to do as well as random unique DC features. It’ll be a bit of a hodgepodge but if you have any suggestions or photos capturing DC pride please send an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com

Unfortunately, I’m gonna kick this off with a bit of sad news: A reader sends in word that there was an armed robbery at French’s Dry Cleaner, 3706 14th St NW, August 9.

“Dear PoP,

Are you interested in doing a little blurb on this business and encouraging people to use French’s for their dry cleaning and tailoring this week? I’d like to launch a one week campaign to show community support.”

So if you need some drycleaning/tailoring and live in the area, it would be a nice gesture to stop by French’s (right near Red Derby).

For those looking for fun philanthropic fundraiser happy hour – this is a good one in Adams Morgan:

City at Peace DC uses the performing arts to develop the skills, talents, and confidence of young people to promote cross-cultural understanding, conflict resolution, and violence prevention. For the last 15 years, this award-winning program has worked with more than 1,000 young people to build trusting relationships, achieve artistic excellence, and create lasting change in the lives of participants, their families, their schools, and their communities.

City at Peace’s programming is thriving despite the fiscal challenges facing our country. (Just this week we are teaming up with with Metro Teen AIDS and Mayor Fenty’s 2010 Summer Youth Employment Program for a city-wide street theatre tour.) Our books, however, are hurting. To keep City at Peace thriving, we must raise $25,000 by September 1. JOIN US for a special fundraising event featuring City at Peace cast, staff, and board members.

When: August 10, 2010 from 6:30pm-9:30pm

Where: Angles Bar and Billiards (2339 18th Street, NW)

What: City at Peace celebration

Why: Because City at Peace needs you and YOU need a City at Peace

Snacks will be provided. All drinks are 1$ off all night Adams Morgan’s
best hamburgers and pulled pork sandwiches are 2 for 1.

DC needs City at Peace. In 2008, nearly 4,500 DC youths were arrested for criminal activity and 92% of deaths of residents aged 10-24 were caused by homicide. DC’s high-school graduation rate is less than 50%. City at Peace participants are less likely to be caught up in violent crime, are more likely to graduate high school and to attend college. They also consistently report choosing career paths that, but for the program, they would not have considered within reach.

Nationals Fans after the jump (I can’t believe it but I’m going to my first game of the season tonight! And if you lost your pet bunny check a photo and location after the jump. (more…)

This sounds like a great program. From an email:

City at Peace DC’s 2nd annual free Street Theatre tour kicks off this week in neighborhoods around the city. The program is designed to bring the conflicts and creative solutions of young people to a wider audience, using performing arts as a vehicle for change through a unique
partnership with Metro TeenAIDS and the DC Department of Parks and Recreation. The result: 65 youths from the DC area created an original musical about healthy relationships, AIDS awareness and sexuality called UNPROTECTED.

There will be multiple receptions following each show, as a celebration of all this summer’s cast has accomplished and a chance to talk to cast and board members about why they are involved with this incredible organization. Suggested donation at each reception is $20. You can, of course, attend free street theatre without attending an event. We hope you’ll grab a blanket, a group of friends and join us this week at any – or all – of the following events:

Details after the jump. (more…)

From the folks at Room 11 (corner of 11th and Lamont St, NW):

“Come to Room 11 tonight for a Hendrick’s Gin Happy Hour from 6-7:30pm featuring free samples of Hendrick’s cocktails and drink specials.

Also debuting tonight is our Sexy St Germain Summer Strawberry Sangria!”

Thanks to Bonnie for sending in the amazing photo above. She writes:

“I was so stunned by how the clouds looked one day on Columbia Road that I had to stop and take a pic. There were several mouths stuck wide open staring at the sky that day.”

And above is a fun art video sent in by a former Columbia Heights resident. They write:

“Inspired by Paris artist, Jerome G. Dermuth, we’ve taken on 7 (more to follow) swing installation in San Francisco as part of an ongoing Happiness Project aimed at loss of youth. The short video below shows the installation, scouting, and lots of footage of randoms using the swings with complete and utter joy as they relent to a push and some wind in their hair. Watch it through. The joy as this autistic kid’s father’s face as he gets on a swing for the first time in 40 years is our parting shot. It’s pure and simple bliss that’s sadly been long ignored and forgotten.”
