“Thursday at 6 PM – 9 PM
Smoke & Barrel
2471 18th St NW

Start your 4th of July weekend off by helping out families in NEED!

West Virginia families are seriously devastated by major flooding over the past week. We can’t make it home to help, but we’re determined to do all we can from here and we need you in too.

Please join us and our very special guest the Honorable Nick Rahall this Thursday, downstairs at Smoke and Barrel for great beer and good company.

We will have some great drink specials and we’ll be raffling off some cool prizes, so don’t miss it!

Money raised will be donated to United Way of Central WV. If you can’t be in attendance, please donate on their website.

We’re looking for raffle items so if you’d like to contribute, please reach out to one of the hosts!”

“Thanks to all who commented and reached out after the 6 senior feral cats from Shepherd Alley, being displaced by the new Marriott construction, were featured in the 4/29/16 Afternoon Animal Fix. To give you an update, we have, thanks to the PoPville community, found these cats a wonderful sanctuary home in Maryland, and have successfully trapped 5 of the cats as of this writing. We are taking them for senior feral work-ups at a local vet, including testing, vaccinations, and treatment for any issues.

We are hoping to ask the kind hearts of the community to help out with funding. Any donations go directly to the 501(c)3 rescue that is managing the relocation of the cats, Four Paws Rescue Team. Please go to https://YouCaring.com/MarriottCats and donate if you can. Every little bit helps! Thank you so much!”

From an email:

“Fourth Matt Shlonsky Memorial Fund Happy Hour

-To date, we’re 7k away from our minimum goal of $50,000. As you know, this will allow the fund to live perpetuity off the interest gained from the endowment.

-Secondly, tomorrow we are hosting our next fundraiser at 6pm at Lost & Found (1240 9th St, NW.) With (really really good) tickets from the Nationals donated as raffle prizes and door donations, we hope to get close to that 50k number. Event info is linked here.

dabney
122 Blagden Alley NW

The accolades make even more sense now…

From an email:

“The Dabney has not one or two but FOUR versions of the classic cocktail to suit your drinking needs. They include:

– Negroni Classico: Fords Gin, Campari, Cocchi di Torino, Orange Oil

– Negroni Spagliato: Green Hat Navy Strength Gin, Don Ciccio E Figli Cinque, Campari, Old Hill Betwixt Cider, gin botanicals

– Rhubarb Negroni: Bluecoat Gin, H&H Rainwater Madeira, Sfumato Amaro, Rhubarb

– Negroni Jello Shots: Yes, you read correctly. Smooth Ambler Gin, Campari, Sweet Vermouth, gelatin

Each take on the Negroni is $13, and half the price of each drink purchased will go to DC Greens, an amazing local organization that chef Jeremiah Langhorne and the team at The Dabney work with regularly.

Negroni Week runs through this Sunday, June 12.

DC Greens uses the power of partnerships to support food education, food access, and food policy, in the nation’s capital. They’re working toward a city where food education is on the menu in every classroom; where doctors write prescriptions for fresh fruits and vegetables as a matter of course; where urban agriculture is a valued element of our cityscape; and where zip code doesn’t determine life expectancy.”

From friends of Matt Shlonsky:

“I wanted to keep you updated on our progress over the last month or two. So far we have raised about $35,000 of the $50,000 needed for American University to start a permanent endowment. Once we hit the $50,000 goal, AU will begin providing grants to student and faculty to research ways to make DC a healthier, cleaner, and safer place! These donations have been gathered from an array of family, friends, nonprofits, local and national businesses.

We have a third fundraiser planned at Tenley Bar and Grill on April 26th from 6-10pm [4611 41st Street, NW]. The Facebook event is here. Our goal is to raise a few thousand more dollars at this event and awareness about the fund. Fifteen dollar donation at the door gets the participant happy hour deals all night.”
