Tables Without Borders DC Dinner Series Kicks Off Tonight, Still Some Seats Available

“My project partner Sara Abdel-Rahim and I have organized a non-profit dinner series named Tables Without Borders to support refugee and asylum-seeking chefs in the DC area. On each night of World Refugee Week (June 17-22), a popular DC restaurant (A Rake’s Progress, Espita, Little Sesame, Maydan, and Himitsu) will welcome an emerging refugee or asylum-seeking chef into the kitchen and offer a unique menu combining the restaurant and chef’s signature flavors. A portion of all proceeds will benefit HIAS, a leader in refugee resettlement and advocacy.”

“With heavy hearts, we said goodbye to Bud on Sunday as he finally succumbed to the injuries he received when assaulted by a group of individuals just outside where he lived in Washington DC. He was never alone as we were there in spirit until the end. His organs have gone to a good cause and are helping at least two others live.

My mom and a network of Nicaraguan grandmothers through their nonprofit, AbueNica, have been helping asylum seekers – providing food, medical services, lawyers, etc. It’s crucially needed work as there currently aren’t many supports in place for refugees.

Anyone is welcome! We’ll have happy hour specials all evening, awesome raffle prizes, and members of the diaspora leadership there to answer questions – so even if people want to just learn about what’s going on, it’s a forum for that too.”

Beverly Jones, artist, entrepreneur, “mother” of many pop-ups in and around Logan Circle for local artists, and the last manager of Pulp on the Hill and Pulp on 14th Street, NW, having taken over from Pulp founder, the late Ron “Feel the Love” Henderson, died in the early morning of March 23 of Myeloma. She was a welcoming face at Pulp and now, as we still mourn the loss of Pulp, we mourn Beverly. Her family and friends will celebrate her life on May 4 with details to be announced at the GoFundMe Page established by her daughter. “Paddlestar Galactica Returns for a Full Month of Ping-Pong Madness for a Good Cause”

“On April 7th, $200 will buy you a lot of dirty tricks for a good cause at 826DC’s Paddlestar Galactica ping-pong tournament. You could make your opponent play with their hand instead of a paddle, wear an eye patch, or be pummeled by ping-pong balls while receiving your serve. No, this is not your typical fundraiser–but 826DC is also not your typical DC nonprofit.

Steeped in whimsy and wonder, 826DC is dedicated to supporting students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. For the seventh annual Paddlestar Galactica, 826DC is challenging the community to compete in a bracket-style ping-pong tournament. Participants have the month prior to fundraise before competing in the main event on April 7th, noon to 3:00pm at DC’s hottest social club devoted to ping-pong, SPIN (1332 F Street, NW).

This is 826DC’s largest annual fundraiser and all donations go directly to support their free writing programs, homework help, and publishing opportunities for DC’s young people. (more…)

Her fiancée Daniel is running the Boston marathon in a few weeks and is still $4,000 away from his fundraising goal. I don’t know him personally but saw a news story about the race and wanted to help out. Sometimes the runner has to make up the difference for these fundraising bibs. (more…)

Boundary Stone just raised $155,000 for pediatric cancer research!

Boundary Stone is of course one of the best pubs in D.C. for many reasons. And this is a big one.

So much awfulness bringing out so much greatness. Thanks to all who donated from Team PoPville we represented properly! And oh my God, did so many people rally for this. And while Boundary Stone thanks many key players (see below), I’d like to take the opportunity to thank them, and especially the Croke family, for all they do for this event. It is truly stunning to witness. The passion they have in fighting this awful illness is truly inspiring. And it’s a good reminder that while all this negativity abounds these days, there is also much greatness to celebrate. So on behalf of so many, thank you to Boundary Stone for leading the charge in this fight year after year after year.

And Brandon Skall, of D.C. Brau fame, really is the greatest emcee I’ve ever witnessed.

“National Cathedral to be Built Out of Legos to Raise Money for Earthquake Repairs”

“Washington National Cathedral launched its new “Let There Be Lego!” project to build a miniature, 13-foot- long scale model of the Cathedral out of 400,000 Lego bricks. Starting March 1, members of the public will be invited to “buy a brick” for $2.00, and help build up the Cathedral brick by brick, with all proceeds going toward restoration of parts of the Cathedral damaged by the 2011 earthquake.” (more…)
