This week’s question is a reader request:

“I live on the NE/NW border and am looking for some new running routes. The Glenwood cemetery is a large area of land that is open during daylight hours, but their website is not clear about a running and jogging policy. I have known of some cemeteries that permit this, given that you do not interfere with any ongoing funerals or processions.

What do people think about running in a cemetery? It is generally okay or is it disrespectful?”

While we once spoke about dog walking in a cemetery – do you think it’s ok to run in one?

How much longer do you think it’s gonna last?

As we near the end of the first week of the shutdown – the novelty is wearing off and it’s starting to feel real. While it was fun to track all the cool deals around town – I’m now wondering how long, realistically, this thing might actually last. Obviously losing even one day of pay is painful for some and catastrophic for others but for those who have a little cushion – how much longer could you last before making some serious financial cuts? For those who’ve applied for unemployment – did the process run smoothly? What percentage of your paycheck will you receive?

Last week we talked about our favorite books of all time because the National Book Festival was coming up. This Sunday is the much anticipated finale of Breaking Bad so let’s talk TV. Last year we spoke about some of our favorite foreign tv shows but for this week let’s hear your favorite tv series of all time? You know the ones you can gorge on and watch a dozen episodes in one sitting if given the opportunity. Though I’ve enjoyed Breaking Bad very much, I’ve narrowed it down to my two favorites – The Wire and Battlestar Galactica. What about you? It doesn’t have to be a drama – could be any genre.

Since this weekend is the National Book Festival I thought I’d use this week’s question to ask about your all time favorite reads. In August we looked at some summer reader recs but today let’s go with your all time favorite(s). It’s funny how this answer can change – I remember loving reading Soldier of a Great War by Mark Helperin but when I reread it I didn’t like as much. I can however read most of Steinbeck especially Cannery Row and love it every time. So out of curiousity – when was the last time you read your all time favorite? And I guess we should split this into two categories – what is your favorite fiction and what is your favorite non-fiction read?

A couple weeks ago when we spoke about abrupt closure of the recently opened Diego restaurant at 14th and V St, NW – some commenters mentioned the nearby Judy Restaurant:

“Judys is an authentic Salvadoran/Mexican restaurant that has been around for more than 20 years. We are right between two of the busiest locations in DC: U Street and Columbia Heights. Along with our many authentic and delicious plates, we are best known for our pupusas and curtido!! Also one of our best kept secrets is our pool tables located on the second floor. Whether you’re in the neighborhood or just visiting, please come and join us for great and affordable food and drinks!”

You can see their menu here.

I thought we could use today’s FQotD to talk about some overlooked spots in town. It doesn’t necessarily have to be cheap eats and it doesn’t necessarily even have to be a restaurant – could be some good clothing or other retail spot. What do you think are the best, most overlooked spots in town?

I’m gonna vote for the sandwiches and back patio of The Bean Counter in Georgetown.

It’s not the fanciest of patios but I’ve walked past it a hundred times without realizing it was there. And it’s a great spot to enjoy a great sandwich. You can see their simple but tasty menu here.

We’ve occasionally debated painting brick in the past but for today – let’s just talk about this specific house. It’s a row house that is being developed into condos just south of the Petworth metro. It’s a complete renovation and was starting to look really good. I really dig the windows. Now for the record, I’m normally pro-paint but one day I walked passed here and noticed it had been painted gray. Side note: Has “flipper yellow” become “flipper gray”? Anyway, you can see how the original brick looked below. So what do you think – should they have kept the original brick or painted it gray or painted it another color?

Checking out Hopadidl’s photo of the Little Free Library at 1312 Florida Ave, NW, which is awesome by the by, it reminded me that I forgot to ask for this Summer’s reading recommendations. Since it’s already August – let’s narrow it down to only one recommendation. So if someone only had time to read one book this summer – which one would you recommend?

In a rant/revel this week a commenter asks what did you go to study in school and what do you do now? I thought this would be a fun summer FQotD – So I’ll kick it off – I studied Political Science and International Affairs and before settling in as a blogger I was a paralegal, defense/air force consultant, reporter for a Japanese newspaper (Asahi Shimbun), a Congressional liaison for a small think tank, and a homeland security consultant. Crazy writing all that down. So what did you study and what path did you take to your current job?

Like many others, I love eating, drinking and just hanging out at roof top bars and outdoor patios. Obviously when we’ve been having weather like we’ve had this week, sitting outside isn’t always the most comfortable spot. But it got me wondering if there are some outdoor roof decks and/or patios that are still comfortable during the hot months? I’m particularly looking for some that are cool but you still have a view and or feel like you are outside. Know of any cool outdoor dining/drinking spots?

“Dear PoPville,

Going off the “Rib Pit” lament – What “old DC” restaurants–aka ones that predate the change in neighborhoods like Petworth–are worth going into?”

A few years ago we talked about the old school restaurants we most missed. And we took a crack at some of our current old school favorites last year. So for today – what old school restaurants do you think are most overlooked? Nevermind price, could be a carryout or fine dining, which old school restaurant/shop is the absolute best in DC?
