Now that we know how many folks got a break it’s time for my second favorite summer question – what are you reading? I can’t believe I’m only getting to it now, but I’m finally reading Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential and it’s terrific as expected. RIP. What are you guys reading? What’s the best book you read this summer?

I can’t believe it but August is approaching and with August, pumpkin spiced lattes aren’t too far behind – so let’s get at it. Who was/is lucky enough to take a vacation this summer? If you are a lucky one – where’d you go and how much time off did you take? Anyone lucky enough to go overseas? For those who hit the beach – which one did you go to? Anyone do a staycation here in D.C.?

From the files of I’m just curious and it’s a slow summer day so what the hell – do you smoke pot? Weed? Whatever folks call it these days. Vape, edidibles or whatever? Do you partake more now that it’s legal in D.C.? For those who do partake – how often? If you vape rather than smoke or vice versa – why do you prefer one method over the other? Do you feel it’s less stigmatized (if it ever was)? I’m just curious – ever living, ever feeling, happy Friday!

“Dear PoPville,

I need your help!

My husband and I are looking for a fantastic anniversary plan to celebrate 10 years of marriage mid-July. We have a big vacation planned later this year but want to do something special the day of. What is special, beautiful, delicious enough without totally wrecking our budget? Ideally we’d stay in the $200 range for the two of us, some drinks, and of course dessert. Also any alternative plans if dinner doesn’t pan out. Ultimately, I rented a sweet dress on RTR and need somewhere to wear it!

Thank you!

A reader rants:

“Shocked & disappointed to see the new The Smith on U Street with huge doors wide open, AC spilling out on hot humid days & loads of apparent climate change deniers inside. Why are DC taxpayers subsidizing a host of carbon reduction strategies, including insulating tiny gaps, only to watch The Smith & it’s patrons screw the rest of us?!”

Ed. Note: The Smith’s Penn Quarter location also has large windows open.

A friend of mine asked this question about SUVs and I found the responses fascinating. So, I’d like to open it up to all new cars. I don’t really know how to define “reasonably priced” but suffice it to say we’re not talking about BMWs, Mercedes, etc. I’ve been pretty happy with Mazda but am not sure I’d go with one again. So if you were going to buy a practical new car tomorrow – what would you get?

“Dear PoPville,

Was wondering if I could ask my fellow D.C. folks what their “third places” are. [“Examples of third places would be environments such as churches, cafes, clubs, public libraries, or parks.”] I’m on the lookout for a friendly hangout in Northwest or Northeast – just anything with a welcoming, community vibe. Thanks so much in advance!”

From ANC Commissioner Nick DelleDonne (2B04) via the Dupont listserv:

“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has prepared a draft plan to add a 2nd bike lane along 17th St. The plans propose a two-way bike path (as on 15th St.) from Lafayette Square to New Hampshire Ave and include the busy, mixed-use area between P and R Streets NW. As presented, DDOT would reduce vehicle traffic from 2 lanes to 1 lane (plus a turning lane at the intersections). Existing sidewalks would not be changed. Parking would be reduced by 20 spaces. Details here.”

So to be honest, I was surprised how viral the post about The Phillips Collection being free for those under this 30 summer was – so you like art? I like art too – so let’s talk art!! Where are your favorite spots to soak some in? I noticed this new Gallery was coming to Florida Ave – so I’d be interested to know, in addition to favorite museums, are there any galleries you like to check out from time to time too?

galeria love coming soon
