I’ve seen the occasional car fire in an alley. But this is the first couch fire I’ve seen. Thanks to dullshick for uploading to the PoPville flickr pool. Unfortunately no location was given. Totally bizarre.

From a reader:

“The photo was taken at the corner of Sherman and Fairmont. The fire was out and most firefighters were packing up and leaving when I got there at around 720 pm.”

In case anyone was wondering what all the sirens were at that time. Glad to hear that the fire was put out quickly.

Photos like these always blow my mind.

Thanks to a reader for sending. He writes:

“Heard a big boom, then had the next door neighbor stick her head out the front door to tell us that a car was on fire out back. As you can see, the fire dept. knocked the fire down pretty quickly.”

Thanks to a reader for sending this article from WTOP:

“D.C. fire officials say a teenager on a skateboard who grabbed a hook-and-ladder truck that was leaving a fire scene was run over by the apparatus…a 14-year-old male on a skateboard grabbed the truck to be pulled.

The youth fell and the truck ran over his foot. He was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.”

“Dear PoP,

Just wanted to let you know about a pretty large house fire in Mt. Pleasant this morning. Do not have much info hope everyone is ok and would like to let neighbors know in case there is anyway we can help out. The fire was right near the corner of 17th and Kilbourne.”

Thanks to all who sent word especially this reader who also sent the photos. He writes:

“I just happened to walk by as the first fire trucks were arriving at around 1245 pm today at this fire at the Alliance of Concerned Men building at 2905 11th. There was white smoke pouring out of the building, but the firefighters had it under control within about 20 minutes. Here are pictures. As you can see around 7-10 fire trucks and probably 40 plus firefighters responded.”

From around 6:30pm Sunday evening a reader writes:

“While The Woodner on 16th Street gets frequent visits from the fire department, simply due to its sheer size, tonight’s call was a bit larger than usual. I counted at least eight fire trucks, plus accompanying ambulances, police, and rescue vehicles.

16th Street is currently roped off with police tape from Spring Rd to Oak. No access to Spring Place, Perry, Ogden, Otis, Hertford, and Center Streets. Buses are backed up on 16th Street with nowhere to go.”

Some may recall the Woodner from the apparent murder that took place in the beginning of November. Anyone know what happened tonight?

From DCFireems on twitter:

“1231 S St NW – 2-story middle of row, rowhouse, fire started on 1st fl and spread to other areas – fire is contained, but not out”

and

“update (5:06pm) – 1231 S st NW – fire under control – appears to be related to fireplace and chimney, etc”

Thanks to a reader for the heads up.

Thanks to all the readers who sent the word about this incident. Following is the most specific though another reader wrote that seven fire trucks were on the scene:

“Dear PoP,

There was an apartment fire at 16th & Monroe Streets tonight at 7:30 p.m. A corner unit on the second floor looks substantially damaged.

The apartment building has a DHCD sign in front, but I believe it is a Coop. The building needs much repair and am hoping the fire is not indicating that the electrical system is going bad for the whole building. Can you tell us what a DHCD sign in front means? When was it was sold to the owners, do they have an obligation to keep up the building in good repair, can they refuse people of certain incomes/races from moving in? What does the DHCD designation mean? Does DHCD follow up with buildings like this to see if they are being maintained or kept in good order? Does Jim Graham know or care about these types of building that aren’t being maintained in the neighborhood?”

Can anyone explain the significance of a DHCD sign?
