Thanks to Lauren for sending at 5:40pm “A pickup truck spontaneously combusted on Randolph at just now (around 5pm). Firefighters sprayed and put it out.”

“Dear PoPville,
Last night there was a small fire at the Estate Apartment building in the Navy Yard. Per the fire department, there was a cardboard box located in the fourth floor trash room that ignited. The sprinkler system went on and is what stopped the fire, but only after it flooded the entire 4th, 3rd and 2nd floor as well as into the lobby. A photo of the culprit cardboard box is attached. Dc swept up the leaves in piles but didn’t come get them! Happened this morning in Fort Davis, SE. I think a hot car may have been the cause. [Ed. Note: DC Fire and EMS has warned about hot cars and Councilmember Allen warned of arson in Hill East.] I saw it smoking then it quickly burst into fire. (more…)

Saw your post about the huge piles of leaves and car fires. Troubling development.

Councilmember Allen posted the following warning on his Facebook feed:
Hill East neighbors (and folks elsewhere), I wanted to alert you and update on what we suspect to be multiple incidents of arson (I’ve seen video from neighbor’s cameras). Over the past few weeks, someone has been lighting piles of leaves on fire, most recently in the area around 15th and D St., SE last night. The fire has spread to cars parked along the street and done serious damage. (more…)
