“Dear PoP,

We want to take our two-year-old to her first fireworks show. Because it’s after her bedtime, and because she might freak out, we’d like to stay in the hood. Where around here can we see the fireworks, and still have a quick escape route for the tyke?”

Well assuming you’re talking about Petworth, you can pretty much go to any corner from New Hampshire and Georgia up to Kennedy Street and everywhere in between. But there’s also great street shows all over Columbia Heights and H Street, NE as well. Personally I love watching the mall fireworks at Cardozo High School, at 13th Street and Clifton, mixed with the nearby street shows. But for the folks who have little children do you have any recommendations? And I guess just in general, where are your favorite spots to watch the mall and/or neighborhood fireworks shows?

OjO Latino is a series by Néstor Sánchez Cordero. This week features the Caribbean Day parade. Néstor says, “Images are around, the secret is to catch them at the right moment and with the right light…”

Two more striking photos after the jump. These are the final photos from the parade! (more…)

Well a reader couldn’t wait until Monday so here ya go. How was your experience? I didn’t stay for the mud people this year but my favorite part was still the big 18 wheelers filled with speakers. So good. Submit your photos of the parade via email or to the PoPville flickr pool here.

This year the street was more closed off than last year but after a while the barricades were crossed.

I’m not sure what part of the caribbean these folks were representing:

Lot of amazing costumes of course:

Lots more after the jump. (more…)

“Hey PoP,

I am new to DC this summer and I have really been enjoying your postings and information on the city and the Petworth area where I live.

I am interested in getting a little information about the Caribbean festival and parade this weekend and was wondering if you could provide your readers with a few details. So far their website has been a little sparse. As a longtime resident of DC can you provide any info on this years festival or of festivals in the past?”

Yes! I can’t believe I forgot to mention this. It is amazing and you all must immediately change your plans to attend the parade this Saturday. Seriously. It is amazing. If you don’t believe me, check out photos from last year’s parade.

From the DC Caribbean Carnival Web site:

“The annual Extravaganza Parade will be staged along the Georgia Avenue corridor on Saturday, June 27, 2009 , and will commence at Missouri Avenue at 11:00 a.m. and terminate at the international marketplace at “DE SAVANNAH” – Banneker Recreation Park. DC Caribbean Carnival will host the international marketplace at “DE SAVANNAH ” from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m featuring food, craft and entertainment”

I recommend you get to Georgia Ave. anytime between 12 and 2 pm. And don’t wear any nice clothes cause you’ll get dirty!

Alright, I think I have to bring back the PoP weekend picks because this was awesome. All week they’ve been having concerts at various venues around town and this weekend they had a 2 day free concert by the Washington Monument. I hit one show at Bohemian Caverns and stopped by the Mall on Sunday. The concert on the mall was fantastic. I caught Buckwheat Zydeco:

The weather was perfect:

The Duke Ellington Jazz Festival Web site says:

“The Duke Ellington Jazz Festival (DEJF) is an annual celebration named in honor of musical genius and native Washingtonian Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington. Each year, thousands come together in the nation

Jazz in the Sculpture Garden, located at 7th Street and Constitution Avenue NW, is a blast. When the weather is warm as it was last Friday it is hard to find a better way to spend your early evening. The concerts go from 5:00PM to 8:30PM and you can find the full schedule here. I hadn’t been for a while and forgot how fun it was. It’s a great spot for a picnic or just to put your feet in the fountain.

And don’t forget the cool sculptures:

Wow, a Latino Festival on 14th Street sounds like it would be awesome:
