astronomy

From an email:

“The National Science Foundation will be one of a few groups and a lot of amateur astronomers who gather by the Washington Monument for the 7th annual Astronomy Festival on the Mall. At the NSF booth alone, we plan to have some great resource materials and a few different kinds of telescopes. It is always a good time, and folks love the evening-centric affair, where they get the opportunity to explore the skies with a plethora of telescopes and experts (6-11 p.m. although it often starts as people see us setting up around 4:30 p.m.!).”

• Day/night close-up views of the Sun, Moon, Jupiter, Saturn and Mars with optical and radio telescopes

• Planetarium shows under a 25-foot dome

• Interactive hands-on activities presented by NASA and other science and educational organizations

• Astronomical image exhibits

Admission is free.

bonsai
Photo by PoPville flickr user Miki J.

“Dear PoPville,

There’s some awesome stuff happening at the National Arboretum this weekend in celebration of World Bonsai Day. Many people might not know this, but the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum at the Arboretum has one of the best collections of bonsai anywhere in the world (outside of Japan).

There will be workshops, good food and vendors selling bonsai. Looks like the weather might start to clear up on Saturday and Sunday looks to be beautiful.

More info here.

I’ll be there as well – exhibiting photos from my new book, STEPHEN VOSS: CREATING PORTRAITS OF BONSAI, that I’ve been working on for the past year and a half. I’ll have copies of the book to sign as well, fresh from the printer.”
