District Coalition. A non-profit taking a fresh look at the classical music scene in our city. There are more than 250 classical music concerts in DC per year. But they are highly concentrated by location. Around 94% occur in a single ward of D.C., Ward 2, known for very high-income residential neighborhoods such as Georgetown and Capitol Hill. 97% are held in churches and large auditoriums defined by their formality. They are also long… averaging around 120 minutes, and offer few opportunities for interaction among audience members.

What
Our second concert. Have fun and enjoy music. We have DJs, Opera, Classical, Hip Hop, and Jazz together—more than 4 hours of music in a fun and relaxed setting. Go with your friends, family, and kids, order drinks, eat, and talk.

When
Sunday, May 14th, 2 pm.

Where

DC Jazz Jam which ran for over 10 years on U Street, has relaunched in-person Sunday evening jam sessions again after a 3-year Covid hiatus. Organized since 2009 by drummer Will Stephens, the jam session is open to jazz players of all levels, as well as jazz appreciators, friends, neighbors, and families. Using an arts grant from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, the DC Jazz Jam brings in special guests to headline and host the jam session each week, playing alongside a varying house band rhythm section of piano, bass, guitar, and drums made up of some of the area’s best players.

Starting in March 2023, DC Jazz Jam found a new, regular home at Haydee’s Restaurant in Mount Pleasant neighborhood on Sunday evenings. In May 2023, (more…)

“Make 2023 the year you leave the streetcar in your dust. To celebrate (almost to the day) the 7 year anniversary of the H Street Corridor Streetcar, come join us for our 5th annual “Running of the Streetcar” !!!

Think you’re faster than the streetcar? We bet you are, but come find out for sure on Sunday, April 30. Just think of the famed Running of the Bulls at Pamplona, except for this event your goal is to outpace a big, red mechanical beast — H Street’s infamous streetcar!

Date: April 30th
Time: 2:00 pm
Location: Wunder Garten

From the National Gallery of Art:

“DC’s favorite summer concert series is back! Every Friday, from May 19 through August 4, our Sculpture Garden will come alive with musical performances including jazz, Latin fusion, bluegrass, and more.

This season captures the breadth of the American musical experience with Latin fusion from ¡Tumbao! on May 26, zydeco from Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas on June 23, Indigenous fusion from D’DAT on June 30, and funk and soul from the 8 Ohms Band on July 28. Another highlight is a special Juneteenth celebration concert with the Muneer Nasser Quintet on June 16, one of seven local acts this year.

Due to high demand, we are instituting a free lottery system so that anyone interested in attending Jazz in the Garden has an equal chance to participate. Each concert will have its own lottery, which will open the week prior on Monday at 10:00 a.m. and close that Friday at noon. (more…)
