“Dear PoPville,

I’ve had a few weird interactions lately and was wondering if anyone else has experienced the same thing. Three times in the past couple of months, two young women have stopped me while walking downtown near my office. They ask if I’d like to come to their study group and launch into a speech about “God the mother.”

The first time it happened, I didn’t think too much of it – they’re perfectly friendly but something about it is fairly aggressive. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m hoping the people of PoPville can give me some suggestions for a good shoe repair shop in DC.

The more reasonably priced the better, but also willing to pay for quality work. Specifically looking for somewhere that can resole and polish a couple pairs of well-loved leather boots, and replace a heel tip that came off somewhere along the way. Ideally somewhere near H St/NOMA, Downtown/Chinatown, Logan or Dupont Circle, but won’t rule out somewhere else if they’re reputable! Thanks for any suggestions (or places to avoid)!”

“Dear PoPville,

My friend recently had her car recovered after DC towed and lost it for about 8 weeks. Her car was in a temporary Emergency, No Parking area and was towed. The city told her they ticketed her car and towed 5 others around hers, but not hers. Can you hear my eyes rolling? Some construction workers said hey saw her black SUV towed and an embassy said they had surveillance tape of it, though they couldn’t share it. Finally, 8ish weeks later, they found it in a tow lot. With several other long lost cars. All had windows busted in. Crazy! Has anyone else ever had their car lost by DC? Seriously lost, not towed around the corner. Clip of the news story here.

Ed. Note: They sure have.

“Dear PoPville,

My partner and I are under contract to purchase a home in Shaw and expect to close the 2nd week of December. We are planning a large renovation project before we move in and expect that process to take about 6 months. Currently, we own a condo in Bloomingdale that we plan on selling closer to when the renovation project is completed.

We recently received a letter from a real estate agent representing a potential buyer for our unit. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

There’s an Airbnb house in my neighborhood where people come in and 1 or 2 minutes later come out. It looks very suspicious. They do this for few days a month, every 1 or 2 months. The house is located in Petworth. Is this normal?”

Ed. Note: Obviously sounds like it could be dealing. Have others heard of Airbnbs being used as spots to deal? Has anyone dealt (no pun intended) with a similar situation?

“Dear PoPville,

We bought a home earlier this year. While doing some other online digging I noticed our proposed 2019 assessment is an increase of $110,000 over the 2018 value! We have not done any major improvements other than upgrading the electrical panel. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

After doing my annual closet clean, I had a few bags of clothes to drop off at the The Clothing Recycle Center located at the corner of 18th and California Street NW near the Marie Reed Center. As I was unloading my car to take the bags to the donation box, a very aggressive woman approached me wanting me to give the bags of clothes to her. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m leaving the area(sadly!) and am trying to think of a bar to have a going away happy hour gathering in Adams Morgan/Dupont /U Street or Shaw. It could be a private room or private area though that’s not a requirement. Mostly, I’m trying to think of a spot with plenty of room that I could invite around 30 people to.”

“Dear PoPville,

I got a kick out of these parking sign shenanigans while walking the dogs this morning. Someone who is moving in or out has left these notes in the windshield of every car on the south side of Warner St. They also put up actual official reserved parking signs in the middle of the block which were printed sortofmaybe in adherence with the requisite 72 hours of notice, but my car is parked nowhere near those parking signs. Think this ambitious mover is trying to trick anyone on the block who doesn’t know better into moving their cars for extra space or an insurance policy beyond the spots they legally reserved?”
