“Dear PoPville,

I’m looking for some input from the PoP community about their experiences with or knowledge of policies for advertisements/promotions sent via condo building listservs or allowing promotional material in the condo lobby/shared areas.

I live in a medium-sized condo building in NW DC where the board has a contract with a management company to staff the front desk and handle building maintenance and upkeep, etc. In mid-November on the building listserv (managed by the front desk and the central office of the management company and used to send out notices about construction, etc), we received a somewhat lengthy email advertising a promotional deal from “Company X.” Then, in early December, we received another email on the listserv saying that the same Company X had asked us to participate in their holiday food drive and that they’d left a box in our lobby to collect food donations. The box in the lobby was accompanied by a sign about Company X as well as a stack of postcards detailing their promotional deals. (more…)

Eli demands: “do a post on this.” And I say how high?

According to Wikipedia:

“Panettone is an Italian type of sweet bread loaf originally from Milan (in the local Milanese dialect it is called panetton, usually prepared and enjoyed for Christmas and New Year in Western, Southern, and Southeastern Europe as well as in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, the Horn of Africa, Australia, and to a lesser extent in former French, Spanish, and Portuguese colonies.”

So where do you get one in D.C.?

“Dear PoPville,

Sad to say that I saw the 2 $10s for a $20 scam in action on the platform at Union Station today. I was about 15 feet away and on an important call and wasn’t 100% sure I had correctly recalled this as a scam so I didn’t intervene.

Only when the tricked guy and I both got on the train did I think to google “PoPville $20” – and sure enough, it pulled up the picture of the guy and his walker. It’s done so, so adeptly – and the man really does appear disabled and in-need – that I frankly doubted my own memory and hesitated on intervening. I showed the scammed guy the picture. He actually reacted pretty graciously (“Well I hope he needed it more than I do.”).”

“Dear PoPville,

I’ve been a member of VIDA Fitness in Mount Vernon Triangle since first coming to DC for an internship in 2013. I never fooled myself about VIDA, its parent “lifestyle company,” or their target affluent customer base. It was expensive for me then. It’s expensive for me now. The monthly fee, just over $100, was always a bit of a splurge. Other than rent and student loan payments, my VIDA membership is my greatest monthly expense. I justified it to myself because (1) being physically active was and still is very important to me, (2) it was the most conveniently located gym to where I lived, and (3) the facility was high quality. “Dear PoPville,

On the last pickup day before Christmas I like to put out an envelope with a card and a few bucks for the workers who pick up my trash and recycling all year. Since they’re picked up separately I put out two envelopes. I didn’t want to brave leaving the envelopes out overnight so this morning around 7:30 I put out the two cans and taped an envelope to each lid. I happened to look out around 8:30 and noticed that the recycling had been picked up and the trash hadn’t – and both envelopes were gone!

I have to assume that either the recyclers took it, or a grinchly passerby. If the recyclers took it, does anyone know if the DPW workers have any sort of tip-pooling? Were they safe-guarding it for their trash-collecting brothers? Or was it just pilfered? At this point it’s too late but I’m curious what became of it.”

Let’s also take this opportunity to share who else do we tip, and if you feel comfortable how much do you give them.
