“Yesterday’s slushy disgusting mess is brought to you by 16th and Irving.”

In my walkabout around town yesterday I’d say it would be easier to identify folks who actually did shovel as it was few and far between. Props to DC USA who did a good job as well as some small businesses, pictured below, on Mt. Pleasant Street (though others on that street were pretty negligent.)

From DPW:

“Mayor Muriel Bowser will deploy the District Snow Team, starting at 7 am, Saturday, February 21 with a full deployment of more than 200 snow trucks that will be on their routes by 9 am. Snow is expected tomorrow starting sometime after 9 am with temperatures in the 20s and rising. Snow may continue falling through 4 pm then change to freezing rain for a few hours and then become all rain after 8-9 pm. A quick 1-2 inches of snow will fall which will accumulate on pavements and then .01 inch of ice is possible before changing to all rain overnight Saturday into Sunday. Sunday we could see a few rain showers with temperatures in the mid 40s with the precipitation ending around noon.”

DC Water emails:

This week, temperatures in the District are expected to fall below zero for the first time since 1994. The cold has already caused hundreds of frozen or broken pipes inside local homes this winter. DC Water has fielded more than 4,000 calls from customers over the past 10 days, many for frozen or burst pipes, and other water utilities in the region are experiencing similarly high call volumes.

There are steps you can take to reduce the risk of pipes in your home freezing or breaking. (more…)

“The Rhode Island Ave. bridge was a mess this am. Not fun with a stroller and the stairs looks bad as well. Also, the area where the buses let off people was completely clear so that doesn’t make much sense.”

“Church at 10th and V Street, NW. The sidewalks around this church are always treacherous with ice after a winter weather event. This property really is a blight and the owners seem not to give a rat’s a## about being minimally decent members of this community. Thanks.”

From the Mayor’s office:

“Mayor Muriel Bowser announced today that the snow emergency will be lifted as of 2 pm Tuesday, February 17. By declaring a snow emergency, the District Snow Team (Department of Public Works and Department of Transportation) was able to clear snow emergency routes curb to curb. Additionally, the DC Taxicab Commission has ended their Snow Emergency Fare to coincide with the end of the Snow Emergency.

As of 11:30 am today, 132 vehicles had been ticketed and towed for violating the snow emergency regulations. To learn where a vehicle has been towed, call the Towed Vehicle Locator office at 202.541.6083 or go to http://dpw.dc.gov/service/locate-towed-vehicle.

Vehicles ticketed for a snow emergency violation and towed by DPW were taken to the DPW Impound Lot at 5001 Shepherd Parkway, SW 20032. The lot will be open Wednesday, February 18 between 8 am and 6 pm and motorists may reclaim their vehicles during those hours. The lot is closed today because DC government is closed. Normal hours of operation are weekdays from 8 am to 6 pm, the telephone number is 202.645.5500. The lot is closed weekends and holidays and when DC government is closed. To have an impounded vehicle released, these fees must be paid:

· $250 ticket for the snow emergency violation.
· $100 tow fee.
· $20 per day storage fee.

Additional fees also may be required to be paid, e.g., fees for tickets older than 60 days that have not been entered into the adjudication system.”

In other afternoon snow news – from WMATA:

“Metro will restore more bus service as of 1:30 p.m. as road conditions continue to improve across the region.

At 1:30 p.m., Metrobus will transition from the current “severe snow plan” to a “moderate snow plan.” Under the moderate plan, many more Metrobus routes will operate; however several pre-established detours will be in effect to keep buses off of hilly terrain, narrow side streets and other problem areas.

See how buses operate under the Moderate Snow Plan.”
