Former Mila Discount store at 2015 14th Street, NW

A reader sends word that a Crossroad Trading Co. is coming to a space around 14th and U St, NW. An email to Crossroads confirms that they are coming to 2015 14th Street, NW “later this Fall.”

This is the former Mila Discount space on 14th just north of U Street. Crossroads Trading website says:

Crossroads is a new and recycled fashion retailer that has been serving its fashionable and environmentally conscious customers since 1991.

We are headquartered in Berkeley, California, and our first store opened in San Francisco on Fillmore Street. Today we have 29 retail locations that span the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle, Chicago and New York. And we’re always looking for new, fashion-savvy locations.

Buy – Sell – Trade – Consignment

We provide opportunities for our customers to:

Buy name-brand and designer clothing at a greatly discounted price
Sell gently used clothing for cash or trade
Consign high-end designer items for cash
Keep clothing out of landfill

We specialize in high-quality, name-brand clothing at exceptionally reasonable prices. Think Marc Jacobs, Coach and Banana Republic for a fraction of their original retail prices.

Because we buy most of our merchandise directly from our customers, each store directly reflects the neighborhood it’s in. This makes every store unique to its market.

We are recognized for the high quality of recycled merchandise we sell and have won over 80 “Best-Of” awards.

Updates as they get closer to opening.

Permit master ‏@WashBizNeibs tweeted the news on Friday:

“Attention low budget shoppers — Five Below is coming to DC USA.”

From Five Below’s website:

Five Below, Inc. is the leading retailer of trend-right, extreme-value merchandise to the teen and pre-teen market – all for $1.00 to $5.00.

Five Below’s dynamic assortment of merchandise includes everything from sporting goods, games, fashion accessories and jewelry, to hobbies and collectibles, bath and body, candy and snacks, room décor and storage, stationery and school supplies, video game accessories, books, dvds, iPhone accessories, novelty and “gag,” and seasonal items. Five Below combines exceptional value with trend-right, quality merchandise in a vibrant shopping environment.

I wonder if they are coming into the space that was once touted as the future home of Ellwood Thompson’s before they backed out? If so, it’ll be right next to the coming soon Petco on Irving Street.

And coming right next door to the future Einstein Bagels is an Empower Yoga studio.

On July 3rd we learned Sushi Ko had been closed in Glover Park. At that time we did not know if it was temporary or permanent. Signs posted on their door still indicate they hope to reopen:

I walked by on Saturday and the space was still closed. A phone call to their Chevy Chase location revealed they are still hoping to re-open the Glover Park spot. But a reader hears they will close permanently. Stay tuned.

“Dear PoPville,

There is an alcohol permit request (dated Aug 2) in the window in the same building as the under construction Alba Osteria. This new place is going to be called Eye Street Cellars. I did a google search, but nada. It’s located on Eye St. just past 4 1/2 St (alley) in NW. Permit says Class A retail with Tasting permit. Figure it won’t be some cheap liquor store based on the location, but who knows?”

“Dear PoPville,

Pharmacare Pharmacy on Florida and Georgia Ave. NW served a huge low-income contingency in DC. Social service agencies, particularly those serving HIV/AIDS and mental health clients have been left to scramble to find alternative pharmaceutical providers that deliver and work with clients even if they don’t have insurance. Big hit for an already struggling population.

There’s an article in the Baltimore Sun about the arrests and charges.”
