Catania Bakery is located at 1404 North Capitol St, NW (just south of P).

Thanks to a reader for sending the new hours:

“I was walking past Catania Bakery this morning and noticed their new signage and new Friday hours. I don’t believe they have ever posted their hours before and their website makes no mention of being open to the public. Their Saturday hours were always sort of a secret and you had to go early before everything ran out. In addition to the new signage they have removed the window bars, so it looks rather nice from the street. I’m hoping the inside remains the same, because it really is like walking back in time to another era.”

Salt & Sundry tweeted the news on Friday:

“BIG NEWS! Our Logan Circle shop opens Saturday! Our Union Market shop turns 2 on Sunday! Come celebrate all weekend!”

Congrats on the 2 year anniversary too! Anyone stop by the new Logan spot? If so how does it compare to the one at Union Market?

So maybe the book(store) isn’t dead after all…

From a press release:

“In a teaming of two great Washington community institutions, we’re pleased to announce that Politics and Prose will soon begin operating bookstores at Busboys and Poets restaurants in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. This innovative business arrangement will unite P&P’s bookselling experience with Busboys and Poets’ track record of operating multi-use, food-and-event gathering spaces. Both enterprises share a deep commitment to building community, providing quality customer service, and promoting the public discussion of ideas, cultural issues, and current events.

The new business relationship will start with the opening of a Busboys and Poets in Brookland in December and extend to the launch of a Busboys and Poets in Takoma in January. P&P will operate the book sections in each of these locations. Later in 2015, P&P will assume responsibility for book operations already in existence at the Busboys and Poets restaurants in Hyattsville, Shirlington, and downtown Washington at 5th and K. The book operation at the Busboys and Poets at 14th and V in Washington will remain managed by Teaching for Change. (more…)

And this one I’ve heard of too! Washington Business Journal reported the news and adds some interesting details about choosing CityCenter over Georgetown:

“The brand originally set its sights on Georgetown for a D.C. outpost, Goldmeier said, but the mix of retail at CityCenterDC was ultimately a better fit.

“With no disrespect to T.J. Maxx,” Goldmeier said, “but when that starts to be the big face in Georgetown as opposed to what was originally proposed as a Bloomingdale’s, it does affect an outsider’s view of what’s going on there.”

They say this Arc’teryx location is aiming for a December opening at the corner of 11th and H St, NW.

Interesting replacement for Julia’s Empanadas Columbia Heights location which closed back in January of 2013 – 2 Armadillos Hand-Roasted Chickpeas. Though on twitter 2 Armadillos say “we are figuring out our office space” so it’s not yet clear what, if any, walk in retail component there will be.

Their website says:

Our first batch of crispy chickpeas was made in a tiny New York City oven that was so old it didn’t even have numbers on the dials. The year was 2011, and Greg was just a hungry medical student looking to get through a crazy day at work without running to the vending machine for a bag of chips or a candy bar. He started roasting chickpeas at night, seasoning them with whatever was in the cupboard, and throwing them in a plastic bag to help deal with his daily 4:00pm hunger pangs. His coworkers would look over with curiosity when they heard the afternoon crunching, and inevitably he would offer up some snacks. They were a hit! That’s when he realized he was on to something special, but it would be a while before he had the idea to start a business.

Jimmy and Greg would frequently discuss the many problems with our food system: it’s responsible for the current obesity and diabetes epidemics, it’s bad for the planet, and it creates an environment that perpetuates malnutrition and food insecurity. It had been over a year since Greg started making his chickpeas in that tiny NYC kitchen when everything finally clicked. Jimmy had finished a big real estate deal and they were brainstorming new projects for him to take on. It was on a whim that Greg suggested they start a business to create a better snacking alternative. He never expected Jimmy to get as excited as he did. And just like that, they couldn’t stop talking about how the broken food system was ripe for the 2Armadillos revolution.

You can see info their snacks here.

Looking forward to seeing how the store turns out.
