carpe librum
1275 First St, NE

From a press release:

“Local education nonprofit Turning the Page has been raising funds through their own used bookstore, Carpe Librum, in downtown D.C. (1030 17th St, NW) since the store’s opening as a year-round shop in September 2013, but Carpe Librum originated as a “pop-up” and for twelve years was simply an annual event. Turning the Page has brought back the Carpe Librum pop-up in addition to the year-round store with great success in the NoMa and Mount Vernon Triangle neighborhoods. This spring, Carpe Librum has returned to NoMa for a pop-up bookstore at 1275 First St, NE.

All proceeds from the pop-up directly benefit Turning the Page and their family engagement programs in D.C. public schools. The pop-up sells high-quality, gently used books, CDs, and DVDs, all priced $1-$4. All items for sale have been donated by the public and donations of used books, CDs, and DVDs can be dropped off directly at the pop-up whenever it is open.

The Carpe Librum NoMa pop-up opened to the public on Monday, April 25th. Regular hours are Monday through Friday 11am – 7:30pm and Saturdays 11:30am – 6pm. The pop-up will remain open for only a limited time.

This Carpe Librum pop-up was made possible by StonebridgeCarras and the NoMa Business Improvement District.”

drums
600 Rhode Island Avenue, NE

“Dear PoPville,

I was driving on Rhode Island Ave yesterday and saw some African drums on the side of the road. Curious, I parked and walked in the the store, and it was AWESOME. Essentially, ‘Hand on Drums’ is a pop-up inside a community space headed by these guys from Ghana who sell drums, give drum classes, and hold workshops. But more importantly, they support multiple organizations, notably ‘The Young Women’s Drumming Empowerment Project’ and ‘Drumming up From Poverty’, which help to keep kids off the streets and provides young men and women with craftsman jobs.

Anyways, I probably spent 45mns with them and they are so nice, genuine, and trying to make a difference with their pop-up.

Address is 600 Rhode Island Avenue NE, across the street from the Autozone.”

metro mutts
508 H St, NE will remain open

On Friday when we spoke about H Street and gentrification there were fears that Metro Mutts could be in trouble when Petco arrives. Thanks to a reader for passing on the update:

“After several years of operating retail out of two Capitol Hill locations, we have decided to put our full retail energy and concentration into just one brick & mortar location. Our choice of the H Street shop was primarily driven by the larger footprint, our long-standing relationship with the neighborhood (the owners have lived off H Street since before MM was opened), and the nearby proximity to our close friends & business partners Spot On Training . With this in mind, we are closing our SE location at 407 8th St SE when the lease comes up for renewal in June.

Our flagship store at 508 H St NE remains open and there are NO plans to close or back down in any way, as a result of Petco’s planned arrival in the neighborhood this summer. If you hear rumors to the contrary, we hope you will help spread the word that Metro Mutts NE is here to stay for as long as our loyal customers will support us! We are committed to not only supporting other local small businesses in our neighborhood but fighting to keep our own small business going strong! (more…)
