Last week I shared word that a new restaurant called Tinto would be opening up next Taqueria Distrito Federal at 3463 14th Street, NW in Columbia Heights. At the time, a liquor license application posted out front indicated that the restaurant would be South American Fusion. The owner reached out to me via email and says that was an old concept – actually the space will be:

“a wine and whiskey bistro and gallery. We will feature local art every 6 weeks, our menu is Mediterranean influenced tapas/small plates sourced from local farms.”

The goal is to open in late October. Updates as we get closer to the date.

Back in March we learned that a new Mediterranean restaurant, Dunya, was coming to 8th and Florida (just east of 9th and U St, NW). We knew there would be a summer garden but I didn’t realize a roof deck was also in the plans. A very happy surprise. Looks like it has potential:

Back in January 2013 we learned of plans for a new restaurant and bar called The Hilltop, coming to the corner of Girard and Sherman Avenue, NW.

From owner Sam Jahanbeen:

The Hilltop needs your help! We’re going in front of the Board of Zoning Adjustments to get a special exception – it’s the final step that’ll allow us to open our (and your) new neighborhood restaurant. It’s an easy process but its very important that we show the neighborhood has our back. With that said, if you have moment – please print, sign, and return this letter of support (below). If possible please send them no later than June 14th, 2013.

Thanks for supporting us – and we look forward to seeing you on opening day!

From a press release:

On Tuesday, June 11th, The Red Hen will tap its first keg of “Sailing the Seas of Lees,” a limited release draft beer made in partnership with DC Brau Brewing Company and Linden Vineyards.

Sebastian Zutant, co-owner and beverage director for The Red Hen worked with long-time friends Brandon Skall and Jeff Hancock of DC Brau to create a unique, farmhouse ale, aged for six weeks in oak barrels provided by Winemaker Jim Law of Linden Vineyards in Linden, VA.

“I’ve known Brandon and Jeff for a long time, and have been a huge fan of their beers. It was only a matter of time until we’d find a way to work together,” says Zutant. “Given my predilection towards wine, I thought it would be interesting to find a role for it in the beer making process. Jim Law at Linden has been a trendsetter for Virginia winemaking and we knew he’d be a natural fit; we were all excited to see how a local wine/beer collaboration would turn out.”

As part of the experiment, they aged the brew over Law’s hardscrabble Sauvignon Blanc lees. The result is a juicy, citrus-flavored Saison with a minerality that resembles a cider, or dry white wine.

The limited release “Sailing the Seas of Lees” will be available at The Red Hen beginning June 11th for $7 per glass, and will be offered until all eight sixtels of the brew are gone.
