Little Red Fox
5035 Connecticut Avenue, NW

Thanks to a reader for passing on word from the owner:

Little Red Fox was inspired by owner, and DC native, Matt Carr’s experience living in Portland, OR, in particular by his favorite small neighborhood eatery called the Little Red Bike Café. Though no longer in existence, the café epitomized everything that makes a small business special: an excessively friendly staff led by a husband and wife team; coffee that was roasted just a few miles away and delivered by bicycle; and nearly everything was made in-house, including the fresh apple butter slathered on fried egg sandwiches.

We hope to embody that same spirit here in DC: a friendly neighborhood gathering spot; fresh delicious meals to-go with ingredients crafted in-house; a seasonal menu; local market items that highlight our area’s best offerings; and of course, locally roasted coffee and espresso.”

Dear PoPville,

The real issue started toward the end of the meal. My friend wanted to take most of her meal home with her. The woman who cleared my plate said this wasn’t possible. We didn’t quite understand and asked to speak with our server. My friend and I looked at one another and wondered if there was a language issue or if we were unclear somehow. Our server proceeded to tell us that it was the restaurant’s policy that no shellfish leave the premises with customers due to allergy concerns. This struck us as strange.

At this point we asked to speak with a manager, as neither of us had heard of anything like this before and my friend had over half of her mussels left.

The manager finally came over. He explained that it was the restaurant’s policy and that it is traditional for French and Belgian restaurants to do this for fear that the chef might have undercooked a mussel. He said that if my friend got sick from mussels that he wouldn’t want her to blame the restaurant. I thought, wouldn’t she get sick regardless of whether she took the mussels home or not if they were undercooked to begin with?

I’m pretty sure this a food safety issue. Can any good researchers out there find the explanation of why you aren’t allowed to take home mussels from a restaurant?

Back in 2011 Grill Kabob opened in the former Aditi Indian restaurant at 33rd and M St, NW. Prime corner space should attract somebody to takeover the space soon.

So where can you get the best kabobs in town?

Last week we saw a press release for Teddy and the Bully Bar opening June 24th in the old Sam and Harry’s space at 1200 19th St, NW. To say the space has been transformed is the understatement of the year. It is freaking awesome. You can get all the details from the press release and you’ll soon be able to see their menus here. In the meantime, have a look at the transformation:

“Dear PoPville,

Any more word on Firelake Grill? The sign has disappeared. We’ve been waiting in anticipation for it’s opening.”

Very strange. I looked in the window and it seems ready to open. A few weeks ago I saw them interviewing folks so I thought it’d just be a matter of days before they opened. Anyone hear what’s going on?
