From a press release:

“The latest addition to the growing restaurant/retail scene at The Yards was announced today by the project’s master developer, Forest City Washington. TaKorean, the popular DC-based Korean BBQ taco purveyor has agreed to open a store location at The Yards in DC’s Capitol Riverfront area. The new store location for TaKorean, which was established in 2010 via a local food truck operation, will be located in Twelve12, the new-construction residential and retail component currently under construction at The Yards to be completed in spring 2014. The 1722 SF TaKorean location will be adjacent to the previously announced Sweetgreen store at Twelve12 on 4th Street SE near the intersection of Tingey Street SE.

At full build-out, The Yards will feature approximately 2,800 residential units, 1.8 million SF of office space and roughly 400,000 SF of retail/restaurants/entertainment and services. Twelve12 will offer 218 contemporary apartments with a full service, 50,000 SF Harris Teeter grocery store at street level. In addition a 28,000 SF Vida Fitness complex including its Penthouse Pool and Lounge, Bang Salon and Aura Spa components will be a located adjacent. With the signing of TaKorean, the retail space in Twelve12 is now 92% leased. Residential leasing will begin in the first quarter of 2014 with initial move-ins expected by June.

Previously announced future openings slated for 2014 at The Boilermaker Shops include two more eateries, 100 Montaditos and Willie’s Brew & ‘Que.

Also opening soon are two additional table services restaurants, the first restaurants to debut in the Lumber Shed, the all-glass pavilion at the north edge of the waterfront Yards Park. Osteria Morini, a casual restaurant featuring Northern Italian cuisine is the latest creation from renowned NYC Chef Michael White, is expected to open in mid November. The Yards will mark his restaurant debut in the DC market. Opening in December in the Lumber Shed is Agua 301 featuring a Modern Mexican menu from the owners of Zest Bistro on Barracks Row.

Site excavation for what will be the third residential building at The Yards is about to begin on a
parcel just east of Foundry Lofts at the corner of 4th and Tingey Streets SE. The 327-unit apartment building, designed by renowned architecture firm Robert A.M. Stern Architects, is projected to be completed by late 2015. It will also offer over 20,000 SF of street-level retail space.”

Shaw ANC Rep Kevin Chapple emailed some phenomenal news for Shaw yesterday:

“I am happy to announce that after years of being a vacant blight in the community, the building at 1547 – 7th St will be transformed into a world renowned restaurant. A lease has been signed with chef Richard Sandoval’s restaurant group. The restaurant at 1547 – 7th Street will be one of his El Centro brand.

The laundromat at 1535 – 7th Street will be closing and a coffee shop will take its place.”

Ed. Note: I asked Kevin if he could share more info on the coffee shop and while the owners are still trademarking their name the space will be an “independent coffee shop, i.e. not apart of any chain”.

Kevin also shares that Ivy & Coney will be opening in a few weeks.

And all this is addition to all the good stuff coming to City Market at O.

From an email:

“Haven Pizzeria Pioneer to Bring Custom Pies to Northeast D.C.

D.C. area pizza purveyor Mark Bergami’s next move is bringing him to Rhode Island Row in Northeast D.C., where he will debut his entirely new restaurant, “Bergami’s,” this spring.

This is Bergami’s first time owning a restaurant, but his pizza pedigree is extensive. Prior to Bergami’s, he was involved with Bethesda’s Haven Pizzeria, whose New Haven-style pies received raves from Tom Sietsema of the Washington Post, as well as Washingtonian and Bethesda Magazine, among others.

The fast casual restaurant will let customers choose their crust, sauce and toppings, then watch their artisan pizza be constructed and baked to perfection in a special 90-second oven. Bergami’s will use fresh, healthy ingredients and serve natural sugar sodas, craft beers, wines, and made-to-order coffee drinks (menu attached). Bergami also unveiled that the new restaurant will offer a revolutionary “carb-less pizza” featuring a crust made of cauliflower. “My wife was the biggest critic of the idea before trying it, but now she absolutely loves it,” Bergami said of the unusual recipe.

Bergami’s choice of Rhode Island Row is evidence of a growing eastward development trend: Increasingly, businesses see Northeast as the place to build to get ahead of the real estate curve. Bergami was impressed by the development’s positive atmosphere, a crucial element to the success of a restaurant, and he designed his restaurant concept explicitly for Rhode Island Row.”

Back before the explosion of new restaurant around 14th and U – Al Crostino was one of the first new exciting spots and also one of my favorites. I hope they find a new space soon! Last week they wrote:

“This is Al Crostino’s last weekend. Our landlord, JBG, has definitely decided to not extend our lease due to the upcoming condo construction.

We are looking for another location but in the meantime, my mom, chef-owner, will cater parties, do cooking classes and will be your private chef. If you are interested please email or call her at [email protected]/202-797-0523

We, thank you for all your support and patronage throughout the years.”

In June we were happily surprised to see that they were adding a sweet roof deck. Today, a peek in the window reveals they should be opening any day now:

Dunya’s website still says coming soon. I’ll be sure to update when an exact date is announced.

Quite a bit of progress from March of this year:
