Given it’s Bastille Day, I thought I’d go with a French restaurant. La Fourchette is located at 2429 18th St, NW. La Fourchette also seems to have a crowd which I take as a good sign. Any fans out there? If so, any must order items? Also how are the prices?

And of course, Happy Bastille Day! French Maid races might be particularly interesting in the rain…

“Dear PoP,

The old Brown Sugar at the corner of Vermont and U Street, NW had some activity going on when I walked by earlier last week. The door was open and it looked like people were working on the inside. Not sure if anything is moving in, but that is a great location.”

Another reader writes in:

“Just walking by Vermont and Florida and saw a restaurant under construction. Started talking with the guys and it looks like Sweet Mango is opening a second location on that corner, where Brown Sugar used to be.”

Sweet Mango has a current location across from the Georgia Ave/Petworth Metro. I’ll be sure to stop in tonight to see if they can confirm. For those that live nearby – would you be psyched about some Jamaican jerk chicken at this location?

Of course the Sweet Mango across from the Petworth metro has had its share of controversy

We’ve admired Henry’s signs before but have never properly judged the food. You may recall there are now two locations (pictured here) 1704 U St, NW and the newer one is at 317 K St, NW. Their Web site says:

“The Henry’s Soul Café, Home of the Sweet Potato Pie known for fine southern cooking has a family tradition that was originally established in the summer of 1968 at the Washington DC based Henry’s Deli Carryout.

In 1997, almost thirty years later the family legacy was brought to a new and exciting plateau when the younger generation- Jermaine Smith and his business partner Bernard Brooks Jr. opened the doors of the popular Henry’s Soul Café, in Oxon Hill, Maryland. In March 2004, a new location opened in Mitchellville, Maryland. Several new locations are slated to open in the Washington Metro area over the next few years.

The wide variety of menu items that are available on a daily basis “ cooked to order”, is what differentiates Henry’s Soul Café from other soul food restaurants across the nation.”

You can see their menu here. Any must order items besides the sweet potato pie?

Back in April, we first noticed movement at this space. It had been closed for years. A commenter at the time thought it was purchased by the owners of nearby Masa 14.

We know that Masa 14 is already looking to expand into the second floor of their current location but has anyone else heard that they may be opening up a new taqueria as well?

The alcohol application says:

“New restaurant/Taqueria with entertainment serving Mexican cuisine. Entertainment to include
acoustic bands, Mexican style music. Restaurant will have Summer Garden with 99 seats and a
Sidewalk Café with14 seats. Total occupancy load is 274.”

Who ever owns it, it sounds like it’ll be pretty sweet!

Capital City Diner located at 1050 Bladensburg Road, NE has applied for a liquor license. The license says:

“Dine in and out restaurant with a seating capacity inside of 36 and outside seating of 14. Total
occupancy load of 99. Request Entertainment endorsement for inside and outside patio and to
include dancing and cover charge.”

Hmm, not sure if this is just the necessary language but I can’t imagine dancing in such a small space…

At first this space was going to become a crepe place then in Feb. we heard it was going to become a burger spot with an outdoor garden. Then we heard nothing. Perhaps all hope is not lost as a new sign just went up applying for an outdoor seating area. The front of the old Garden District space here looks tailor made for a great outdoor seating area. Stay tuned for more details as they become available.

Thanks to a reader for sending in word about this development at Bill’s Seafood Kitchen (3601 Georgia Ave. NW near Otis in Park View). The reader notes that the new outdoor seating is a definite improvement over “the sweatshirt stand that usually sits there.”

While we’ve discussed this sign before, I don’t think we’ve ever discussed the food. Any fans?
