Jimmy T’s Place is located at 501 E Capitol St, SE. It’s easy to walk by because there isn’t a prominent sign but you will always notice that there are lot of patrons. Nichole is a fan. Anyone else a big fan? If so – what are the must order items?

Back in mid-July we first heard a new Thai restaurant, Teak Wood, was coming to Logan Circle at 1323 14th Street, NW. Tues. night I was taking some photos of the new sign outside (see above) when one of the workers invited me in to take a sneak peek. Sadly I only had my cell phone to take pics but I think it gives a pretty good idea of how nice the space is looking. I’m told that they are shooting to open up the restaurant Thurs. evening but if they are unable to make a Thurs. opening they’ll shoot for a Mon. or Tues. opening at the latest. I’ll update when a firm date is in place.

Clearly it was named appropriately because the space is filled with beautiful wood carvings.

They even have some great carvings on the outside of the restaurant:

A few more photos including the menu after the jump. (more…)

This was a pleasant surprise. While Fat Daddy’s bills itself as serving ‘Breakfast, Fried Chicken, Seafood & Sandwiches’, this is most definitely not a take out space. It is casual on the inside, but like it’s owner Jeff, it’s got lots of charm. The restaurant opened up last Sat. and was named by Jeff’s 2 year old son. A few of the items of the menu are named after Jeff’s family. I nearly wept at the site of the breakfast menu:

Belgian Waffle, French Toast and Hot Cakes as well as Breakfast Sandwiches all for between $2.25 and $5.25. Other items you’ll find on the menu are Chicken Wings, Meatloaf, Chicken, a variety of Seafood, Burgers & Sandwiches, Subs (hot and cold), Salads as well as a variety of sides including collard greens, cornbread, yams, french fries, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables and more. It was awesome to see such reasonably priced fare. When’s the last time you saw a hamburger for $2.25?

They are open 7 days a week Mon. – Thurs. 6am – 11pm, Fri. & Sat. 6am – 1am and Sun. 6am – 7pm.

The space is a bit spartan but comfortable. There is a tv and newspapers plus wifi is coming soon. All in all this looks like a great addition to the neighborhood.

Thanks to all the readers who sent in word about this exciting development. We’ve been following this property closely last hearing that it might become a bakery back in May. Ed. Note: I have a very good feeling we will be hearing about a new bakery for Columbia Heights soon but more on that when deals have been signed. Many folks sent emails after they saw the liquor license application which says:

“New restaurant serving casual Mexican cuisine. Full menu with breakfast, lunch and dinner. Seating capacity of 75. Total occupancy load of 99. Summer Garden with 37 seats and Sidewalk Café with 16 seats.”

That great news on it’s own but I was able to find out a little bit more info about the folks behind the restaurant. So here it is – this space will be put together by the owner of Jackie’s in Silver Spring. However Jackie and her colleagues from Quarry House Tavern, also in Silver Spring, will be working together on this new restaurant. I hear that the food will be quality Mexican, both authentic original and also some ideas inspired from Los Angeles. I found this pretty funny since we literally just had a huge discussion about the best Mexican spots in the city. Last bit of exciting news about is that at some point they will be expanding the space to include a roof deck (knock wood, knock wood).

More on the restaurant as progress is made.

Looks the folks from Black’s will indeed be opening up at 1612 14th St, NW. Their liquor license application went up last weekend as says:

“Modern American Restaurant. No dancing or entertainment provided. Summer garden with 20 seats and sidewalk café with 12 seats. Seating capacity is 180. Total occupancy is 220.”

You can learn about their Palisades spot, BlackSalt, here.

Thanks to an alert reader for spotting this Craigslist ad:

Fully license restaurant business for sale. Business for sale only not the real estate.

Located in the heart of Adams Morgan, 18th Street and Columbia Road NW.

Owner must retire.

Since 1977, El Rincon Espanol Restaurant, 1826 Columbia Road, NW, Washington, DC 20009

What do you think a restaurant like this will go for considering that they already have a liquor license? Were there any fans of the restaurant?

“Dear PoP,

It seems as though there have been people working inside of the Mario’s Pizza place on the corner of Georgia and Princeton, across from Looking Glass Lounge. Have you heard anything about it?”

I stopped by Wed. afternoon and learned that it is going to become a West Indian Take Out place called ‘The Lion’s Den’. They hope to open sometime next week. I’ll be sure to update when an opening date is confirmed.

Mario’s Pizza was last home to First Time Computers at 3519 Georgia Ave, NW over 2 years ago.

“Dear PoP,

What does everyone think of cheap, but delicious, Mexican options in DC? Everyone seems to rave about Lauriol Plaza, but to be honest – the long wait for a table just isn’t made any better by the fact that the food is subpar and, while the margaritas are pretty good- they aren’t anything special or unique. I tend to be the only person in DC with this viewpoint. Or am I?”

Well it’s been over two years since we’ve talked about Lauriol Plaza so it’s always fun to reassess. Lauriol Plaza seems to get a similar reaction as when we talked about Pasta Mia – some folks love it and some hate it.

So what do you think about Lauriol Plaza in general – has anyone changed there mind? For those that don’t like it – where do you get your Mexican fix?
