Great Wall Szechuan House to Renovate Dining Area

More changes in store for Great Wall Szechuan House located at 1527 14th St NW in Logan Circle. Over the summer they got their liquor license and this weekend I noticed that they have a building permit posted:

I stopped in to chat with one of the owners and while there was a bit of a language barrier, I was told that they will be completely renovating the dining area. Construction should start next week or soon there after. Construction will probably take 3-4 weeks. During that time they will remain open for delivery and take out options.

Below is what the inside looks like now. I can’t wait to see how the renovations turn out.

Judging Restaurants – Hill Country

Hill Country is located at 410 7th St, NW in Penn Quarter. You can see their menu here. We once tried to talk about best bbq in the city back in Oct. ’08. A lot has changed since then. And I’ve never heard more varied opinions than those on Hill Country. I’ve been looking forward to this judging. I’m curious on two fronts – how’s the bbq and how’s the music/bar in the basement?

Komi Expansion Looks Nearly Complete, If a bit Spartan…

Back in Dec. ’10 we learned that Komi would be expanding next door into the former Dunkin Donuts at 1511 17th St, NW. Looks like the expansion is nearly finished:

Back in June ’11 there was a big fire that closed Hook and Tackle Box in the 3200 block of M St, NW in Georgetown. I was happy to see Tackle Box will be reopening soon:

JJ’s is located at 1939 14th St NW just south of U Street (and across from the soon to close ChiDogO’s.) JJ’s opened up back in Oct. ’09 in the former Cafe14U. You can see their menu here. Any fans?

Chix is located just off U Street at 2019 11th St, NW. Their Web site says:

“CHIX is committed to providing natural, healthy, delicious, affordable, quick latin-flavored meals in a casual environment.”

Dear PoPville – Best Breakfast Burrito in DC?

“Dear PoPville,

Who makes the best breakfast burrito in DC? I had a serious craving for one this morning, and while a make a mean one myself, I did not have the time or the ingredients. Are there any spots that make good breakfast burritos in DC? I don’t really see them on brunch menus anywhere. Any place that offers them 7 days a week would be a bonus!”

Eat Chicken (Quincy and Georgia Ave, NW) just announced they have ’em. Plus I believe Pico Taco (14th and Florida Ave, NW and 16th and Columbia Rd, NW) serves a mean one. Anywhere else?

Standard is located at the corner of 14th and S St, NW. You can see their menu here. How’s the bbq? Anyone try the donuts yet?

Full disclosure – after I took the photo above they gave me an apple cider donut. It’s hard for me to judge because I was starving at the time but in the .2 seconds it took me to devour it, I thought it was delicious.

New Thai Restaurant – DC Thai Restaurant and Bakery Opens Downtown

Bucking the clever name trend in Thai restaurants (Beau Thai, Thai Phoon Thai Tanic etc.) a new Thai restaurant aptly named – DC Thai Restaurant has opened up at 1018 Vermont Ave, NW (above the recently opened King of Kabob).

I’ll be honest – I’m particularly curious about the bakery part – anyone happen to check them out yet? If not, we’ll revisit for a proper judging after they’ve been open for a bit. You can see their menu here:
