3105 14th St, NW

I first heard some scuttlebutt back in Aug. 2011 about a Cava Mezze Grill coming to Columbia Heights and then in late Jan. 2012 I heard they were looking at 3105 14th St, NW currently home to Radiance Medspa. That scuttlebutt is now confirmed! The building’s owner Chris Donatelli tells me that the lease has been executed and Cava Grill is aiming for a July 1st opening.  Cava Grill is run by the same folks who own Cava Wine Bar located on Barracks Row at 527 8th St SE. Cava Mezze Grill is also coming to 4237 Wisconsin Ave, NW in Tenleytown.

3418 11th St, NW next to Columbia Heights Coffee

Yesterday I had a chance to check out the progress at Maple coming to 3418 11th St, NW next to Columbia Heights Coffee. And now I see how they got their name – check out the bar:

The detail is amazing:

So chatting with the owners revealed that they will be opening by the end of the month. They also confirmed that they will be serving modern American/Italian dishes. But what I hadn’t realized was that they have a Enomatic wine dispenser which will hold 8 bottles:

And they’ll also have two beers on tap:

Stay tuned for an exact opening date in the next couple of weeks. How ’bout that bar?

From a press release:

As a truly seasonal restaurant, Ripple welcomes spring with the opening of a fresh mini gourmet market, Sugar Magnolia, on March 22. The Cleveland Park storefront in front of Ripple offers a rotating selection of artisanal sandwiches, pâtés, salads, craft sodas, and baked goods daily from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. Sugar Magnolia’s darling is the ice cream sandwich: of which all six flavors are scratch-made by pastry chef, Alison Reed. Everything from the cookie dough to the ice cream and hand-dipped or sprinkle-rolled finishing touch is made and packaged at Ripple.

Cream, milk and eggs used in the ice cream sandwiches are sourced from Trickling Springs Creamery and Path Valley Farms, family-owned farms in Pennsylvania. Allan Benton’s bacon, found in the maple bacon waffle ice cream sandwich, comes from Madisonville, Tennessee. All four seasons will be reflected in special ice cream flavors utilizing produce from many of Ripple’s local partner farms, including beets, strawberries, and summer fruits. Savory snacks like the rotating selection of terrines, rillettes, and pâtés are all house made, along with artisanal sandwiches filled with cured meats, smoked fish, and fresh cheeses. Craft sodas and additional sweet and savory treats round out the menu.

Sample Menu Items after the jump. (more…)

In March 2011 we learned that a new bar and restaurant called Mad Momos was coming to 3605 14th St, NW (at Perry Place.) Late last week I took a quick tour to see how things were shaping up. Holy cow. This is a serious renovation. While they’re keeping some historical details, the house was built around 1910/20, this is a near complete gut job.

First floor

If their vision is realized this place has the potential to be absolutely amazing. There is going to be a small patio out front and dining on the first floor. While the second floor will lead to a lounge and outdoor beer garden!

Second floor

I can’t wait to show the after pictures. It’s hard to believe but if all goes well they are aiming for a June opening. But we’ll revisit before then with more details as construction progresses.

Did I mention the outdoor beer garden?

March 2012. 1140 19th St, NW

Back in Dec. 2011 Via 19 added Pho DC in the former Mezze Luna space at 1140 19th St, NW. On Sunday I saw the signs had come down and workers were cleaning out the space. The space has an amazing patio out front so hopefully the next tenant will have better luck. Stay tuned.
