6115 Georgia Avenue, NW

Looks like Chez Billy isn’t the only Chez on Georgia Ave. Chez Aunty Libe is located a bit further north at 6115 Georgia Ave, NW. Their Web site says:

Explore the tastes of the African continent with a visit to Chez Aunty Libe of Washington, DC. Our West African restaurant specializes in spicy Senegalese food and dishes inspired by Cote d’Ivoire (The Ivory Coast). We have dishes made from beef, chicken, and seafood that burst with flavors and aromas that transport you by senses to another continent. Catering service is available when you want to serve your guests food that’s different from the typical special-event menu. Spice up your evening out with Senegalese food from our West African restaurant in Washington, DC.

Owner Liberte Ehemba has 20 years of experience catering for individuals and embassies. As she began to develop her menu, she decided to open Chez Aunty Libe to provide patrons in the greater Washington, DC, area with traditional West African food. Our restaurant is one of only a few similar ones in the area, and we serve a diverse menu that features a broad range of different ethnic foods from West Africa. Liberte even works with the Smithsonian Institution to showcase different kinds of food and explain where you can find them. Because we want our customers to understand the food and culture of this region, you receive an educational adventure when you come to our restaurant.

Sounds awesome. Anyone ever check them out?

From a press release:

When Kera Carpenter opened DOMKU, a Petworth neighborhood game-changer, she could have benefited from a mentor, a space to test her concept, an opportunity to “play kitchen”. Seven years later it is in her own restaurant’s kitchen that she will provide these opportunities to one emerging culinary entrepreneur through StartUp Kitchen.

Applicants must be DC resident, have a basic business license, and present a concept that works in the space along with a viable business plan. Interested entrepreneurs must apply by June 20 to be eligible. Select applications will be reviewed by a committee of food industry judges and finalists will be announced July 3. On July 17, finalists will present formal plans to the committee. The winner will be announced on July 20th at the StartUp Kitchen Launch Party.

The StartUp Kitchen incubation lasts six weeks starting September 3rd. Each Monday night starting September 17th consumers can buy tickets, test the food, and give feedback on the winning concept. Applicants must apply online at http://startupkitchen2012.tumblr.com/ or www.eatlocalfirstdc.com.

Domku is located at 821 Upshur St, NW.

Litestars was located at 2101 L St, NW.

Our mission: We pledge to provide our customers with healthier and tastier food choices prepared with fresh ingredients resulting in a meal with less fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrates and sugar contents.

They opened up back in July 2010.

From popularise:

The concept will be based around an inviting market place environment spearheaded by collaboration between the creators of DURKL and Toki Underground; combining both fashion and food, while at the same time giving local vendors an opportunity to market and sell their products.

We believe that H Street is ready for something new and different. A space that will operate both day and night, during the week and on weekends, providing an offering as diverse as the neighborhood itself. We think of it like a new age Eastern Market. We are excited about the potential possibilities for this project, and look forward to further developing the concept with the input and support of our future customers.

Two Local Visionaries, One New Retail Collaboration

In May of 2012, two great local operators, Erik Bruner-Yang of Toki Underground and Will Sharp of DURKL, signed a lease for Maketto, a groundbreaking joint venture that will forever change the DC retail experience. The new collaborative destination will offer one-of-a-kind shopping and dining come early 2013.

Keeping up with 1414 9th St, NW is getting exhausting. Since Vegetate closed in 2009 the space has become an Ethiopian restaurant called Cafe Eagle then Taqueria Mexicana then an Ethiopian Sports Bar and Restaurant named Eagle (again) then was renamed Northern Restaurant. Whew. It’s now getting renovated and workers on the scene weren’t sure who’d be taking it over. Stay tuned…
