3105 14th St, NW

Good news to start the week off – Cava Grill opens today in Columbia Heights at 3105 14th St, NW (between Irving and Keynon in the former Radiance Medspa space.) Their philosophy:

“We believe in big flavor with a small footprint. Our food is made from delicious, simple, authentic Greek and fresh local ingredients. All our meats are hormone- and antibiotic-free. All our dips and spreads are all-natural. Our bowls, drink cups, cutlery, napkins, and paper bags are compostable, and we recycle our glass and plastic.”

You can see their menu here. They are open daily from 11 am – 10 pm.

Back in April 2012 we learned that Back Alley Waffles was coming to the rear of 1209 10th St, NW in Blagden Alley near the Convention Center. A reader stopped by at 1pm on Sunday and found it closed with the sign pictured above on the window. There is a bit more info on their Website:

Back Alley Waffles
This is DC. This is world-class waffling. If you want to make it in this town, you better have a good waffle.

closed indefinitely
due to the bloodthirsty
business practices
of groupon

Waffles are now $450 each by appointment only.

Here’s what you’ll get:

a fluffy 7″ Belgian waffle with fresh-churned butter and real maple syrup
a 4′ x 4′ mosaic similar to the one shown below (which was stolen—if you can believe it—by two black guys and a white guy at around 3 a.m. one Friday night/Saturday morning several months ago) of the subject matter of your choice*
the materials with which to make the mosaic (roughly $225 at Home Depot)
the unparalleled experience of creating your own piece of art

On June 19th Back Alley Waffles tweeted:

“Welcome to Back Alley Waffles Twitterstream! We currently have a great deal with Groupon!”

PoPville flickr user thisisbossi also stopped by and writes:

“Back Alley Waffles” / “Waffles and Brew” (street address 1209 10th Street, but facing into Blagden Alley) recently closed over a dispute with Groupon. I’m not 100%, but my best guess is that the owner hadn’t capped whatever deal had been issued, resulting in a pretty substantial loss.

These coupon deals can be great for places like recreation or entertainment venues, where you’re selling a product that would have been there anyway — seats in a theater, for example. But for restaurants: you run the risk of selling your product at a net loss, so if that’s the case: you’re supposed to limit how many of the deal can be sold (that is: cap it). Then the money you lose is limited; it’s an investment in hopefully getting new customers.

For a place like this — a tasty product but hidden in an alley — it can be immensely useful at making people aware you exist… as opposed to higher-end restaurants where everyone already knows you exist, knows you’re tasty, but will *only* come when there’s a special deal. That’s how I work with places like Rasika.

But that’s really only beneficial if you cap it, reducing your risk. I’m guessing that didn’t happen here, leaving the businessowner with no other recourse but to close his business and refuse to honor the details. I hate to say it of a neighbor and purveyor of tasty fare, but unfortunately with this information I would best place blame on him. Though Groupon could’ve certainly advised them that they should’ve done an offer that wouldn’t put them under.

From a press release:

Local residents have two big reasons to fire up their taste buds this summer: Roti Mediterranean Grill, a fast casual concept featuring healthy Mediterranean cuisine, is adding two more locations to their existing seven in the D.C. area. One will be unveiled in Union Station’s West Hall (50 Massachusetts Avenue) on Thursday, August 2 and the other by the University of Maryland at The Varsity in College Park (8150 Baltimore Avenue) on Wednesday, August 22.

As more customers crave healthy cuisine, Roti is at the forefront of a larger Mediterranean movement. Its customizable menu allows guests to create their own meal from a variety of bold and unique flavor profiles not found at many other fast-casual chains. In 2011, Roti reached the coveted double-digit positive same-store sales growth, and increased from six to 12 locations — a 100% growth rate. While still in its startup stage, Roti is trending to hit profit margins similar to those of larger chains. The D.C. expansion is yet another nod to their healthy – and flavorful – proposition.

You can see their menu here.

Dear PoPville,

My parents are coming into town in a couple weeks and I’m trying to come up with some locations for dinner. The issue is that my dad is a vegetarian, so I’m trying to find tasty places that have creative vegetarian options for dinner and ideally places that have more than option available. Any suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks in advance!

We looked at some options back in Nov. 2011. Any new spots/options you’d recommend?

1358 H St, NE

Dear PoPville,

I walked by Tacos Impala on H st tonight and saw this paper that was put up this afternoon. It is a stop work order that says the violation is “exceeding the scope of permit”. I thought this place was suppose to be open already but looks like they are far from done. Any information on what is going on?

Back in Sept. 2011 we first heard Tacos Impala was planning on coming to 1358 H St, NE. Unfortunately progress has been a bit slow. Back Dec. 2011 they also had a stop work order. I know they were very popular when they were operating out of 1204 H Street so hopefully they will get back on track soon.
