3162 Mt. Pleasant Street, NW

Back in July we learned that Beau Thai would be opening a 2nd location in the temporary library space at 3162 Mt. Pleasant Street, NW. Ed. Note: Many photos of the renovated library reopening today, Sept. 12th coming soon. Great to see things are moving along with Beau Thai and they’ve already applied for a liquor license:

“New Thai cuisine restaurant with sidewalk café. Number of seats is 78. Total occupancy load 99. Sidewalk Café has 30 seats.”

Very happy to hear about the sidewalk cafe too!

Any long time Mt. Pleasant residents know when was the last time a new restaurant (besides the takeout Angelicos pizza place) opened up on Mt. Pleasant Street?

From a press release:

Tickets are on sale for the first StartUP Kitchen restaurant, DC Dosa, launching Monday, September 17. Space is limited in this four week pop-up that showcases the pioneer incubatee, Priya Ammu and her fast casual Indian Concept.

DC Dosa, offers dosas, the popular Indian lentil and rice pancake, three ways—three fillings and three chutneys—made to order and ready to go. The fillings and chutneys vary seasonally and are vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free.

Diners receive four opportunities to try a sampling of Ammu’s food and critique the winning concept with a three-course-meal. Each Monday through October 8, diners will have the opportunity to meet the operating restaurateur and provide feedback in real-time to help
enhance the final concept.

Tickets for dc dosa StartUp Kitchen restaurant are $35 and can be purchased here.

A few weeks ago we got a pre-preview of the new Tryst/Diner concept coming to 11th and Monroe St, NW in Columbia Heights. Now we finally have a name – The Coupe! And they’ll be “soft opening over the next few weeks”.

From a press release:

The creators of Tryst, The Diner and Open City are scheduled to open their latest spot in Columbia Heights over the next few weeks. The Coupe, a hybrid of their first three concepts, will be a community gathering place located at 3415 11th Street on the corner of 11th and Monroe.

The owner, Constantine Stavropoulos has had a strong bond to this neighborhood since he first toured an old abandoned grocery store on 11th Street six years ago. With the recent mix of independent business development, the 11th Street neighborhood was an ideal place to open their fifth location (in May of this year, they opened ‘Tryst at the Phillips’, making The Coupe number five).

Much like what their other concepts did for their respective neighborhoods, The Coupe, located in a 7,000 square foot space, hopes to become that “third place” for the residents of Columbia Heights. Open 24 hours, this coffeehouse, diner, lounge and bar will offer signature Tryst coffees using a variety of brewing methods, homemade pastries and desserts, a restaurant menu that offers a range of comfort food items throughout the day and night with an added mix of entrees and specials at certain times (eggs, waffles and other diner staples will be served all the time), and a bar program with an emphasis on craft cocktails, an eclectic mix of beers, and a lot of wines by the glass, bottle and on tap.

1781 Florida Ave, NW

Back in March 2012 we learned that Pleasant Pops would be opening a brick and mortar Farmhouse Market and Cafe in the former Rita’s space at 1781 Florida Ave, NW beneath Mint in Adams Morgan. I stopped by yesterday to take a look and the space looks great.

They are still stocking the space and waiting on a few final permits but should be open in about a week. The curved space has a great cafe seating section. Looks like it’s gonna be a great addition to Adams Morgan.

1119 V Street, NW

Tacos El Chilango opened a few weeks ago at 1119 V St, NW in the former Italiano Cafe space next to Izaka Seki. Hopefully you’ll soon be able to get a cerveza (in addition to the tasty fruit juices) with your tacos as Tacos El Chilango has applied for a liquor license. It shouldn’t be a problem as a previous tentant, Gori Cafe, used to have a liquor license at this location.

Incidentally Izaka Seki has a sweet new sign:

From an email:

Get ready to break out your favorite chopsticks. To mark its fifth anniversary, The Source by Wolfgang Puck will join some of the city’s most respected chefs to host a special, one-night-only dinner. On Thursday, September 27th, fiery Szechuan noodles will tangle with their Japanese counterparts in a multi-course extravaganza encompassing the best of Asian cuisine in the District.

“We’re so fortunate to live in a city with great restaurants and a genuinely inclusive chef community and this dinner is our way of thanking our guests for their continued support,” says Executive Chef Scott Drewno. “We’re proud of what we’ve achieved at The Source over the last five years. This dinner is a great avenue for us to give guests a taste of something new, and spotlight chefs who have been instrumental in advancing the path of Asian cuisine in this city.”

From Taiwanese specialties to Szechuan dishes, guests will enjoy the celebrated Asian dishes of Chef Eric Bruner-Yang of Toki Underground, Chef Liu Chaosheng of Mala Tang, Chef Haidar Karoum of Proof and Estadio, Chefs Yesoon and Danny Lee of Mandu and Chef Kaz Okochi of Kaz Sushi Bistro. Chef Drewno will end the savory courses with a Szechuan-influenced noodle dish, and The Source’s Pastry Chef, Duane Copeland, will feature a fitting dessert for the evening.

The seven-course dinner will be priced at $100 per person (excluding tax and gratuity) The restaurant will also offer a wine pairing option for an additional $45 per person. The night will begin with a cocktail reception in lounge at The Source at 6:30 p.m. featuring local wines and beers as well as dim sum passed hors d’oeuvres designed by Chef Drewno and his team at The Source. On Aug. 27th Uniontown Bar and Grill closed at 2200 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. SE in Anacostia. At the time WJLA reported:

Late last week, Uniontown Bar & Grill owner Natasha Dasher pleaded guilty to two felonies and may face up to 20 years in prison. According to the Washington Post, she pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute cocaine and a conspiracy charge. Then, on Friday, her landlord evicted her and the restaurant, which was housed at 2200 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. SE, because Dasher owed $18,000 in back rent.

In the meantime, the closure of Uniontown leaves another hole in a market that has a dearth of sit-down restaurants and is leaving residents lamenting its loss.

Well that hole may be filled by none other than Busboys and Poets. Busboys has two other locations in the city at 14th and V St, NW and 5th and K St, NW (plus one in Shirlington and one in Hyattsville.) I’m hearing rumors that they’d like to open a 5th location in the former Uniontown space. More info as it becomes available.
