“DC Residents with Qualifying Medical Conditions Can Begin Making Vaccination Appointments Thursday”

“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser and DC Health, led by Dr. LaQuandra Nesbitt, announced that beginning on Thursday, February 25, DC residents with qualifying medical conditions will be eligible to book vaccination appointments through vaccinate.dc.gov or by calling the District’s coronavirus Call Center.

DC residents who are 16-64 with qualifying medical conditions will be eligible to receive the vaccine on March 1; the appointments available on Thursday and Friday will be for next week. Qualifying medical conditions include: (more…)

“RPP price jump effective March 1”

“Dear PoPville,

This text comes from an email I just got from DC DMV reminding me to renew my vehicle registration.

Also, the cost of Residential Parking Permit (RPP) will increase effective March 1, 2021. Any registration with RPP renewed after March 1, 2021 will be subject to the new fees. 

New annual RPP Fees per household are: 1st Vehicle–$50, 2nd Vehicle–$75, 3rd Vehicle–$100, and $150 for each vehicle thereafter.  Also, one senior RPP per household for $35.

Snow Emergency Declared Beginning at 12 a.m. Thursday

From Mayor Bowser’s Office:

“Mayor Muriel Bowser has declared a snow emergency to go into effect at midnight on Thursday, February 18, as the District prepares for significant snowfall. The Mayor will deploy the District Snow Team at midnight, February 18.

Mayor Bowser also announced that on Thursday, February 18, DC Public Schools (DCPS) will be all virtual. All students will learn virtually and should plan to log online per their normal class schedule.

The Mayor has announced that District Government will operate in a telework posture for non-essential/non-emergency employees. Essential employees will report for duty as previously scheduled, unless otherwise directed.

Public COVID-19 testing sites will be closed. Public COVID-19 vaccination sites will be open, including those at Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) sites.

Meal distribution sites at DCPS and DPR facilities will be closed.

While the snow emergency is in effect, motorists may not park on snow emergency routes and vehicles parked on these routes may towed. (more…)

“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser and DC Health, led by Dr. LaQuandra Nesbitt, announced that beginning on Thursday, February 18, individuals who work in four categories will become eligible to book vaccination appointments through vaccinate.dc.gov or by calling the District’s coronavirus Call Center: individuals who work in a grocery store setting, health and human services and social services outreach workers, individuals who work in manufacturing, and individuals who work in food packaging (e.g. persons who work at Food & Friends and other similar facilities). THIS MARCH MADNESS: PLACE YOUR BETS ON DC

It goes without saying that this damn virus has impacted a huge number of businesses in DC. I’ve lost track of the bars and restaurants that have closed, and the friends who have watched their dreams disappear. We say it over and over again, but even in the best of times, our margins are incredibly narrow. The grants and aid packages have been very helpful, but as a friend says, we’re not running P & Ls we’re running L & Ls. Also, don’t forget congress gave us territorial aid, not state aid. We still need help.

Last year, DC legalized sports betting for wagering on games through apps and in-person. I’m too emotionally involved in my teams to bet. My big gamble was getting involved in the hospitality business. Someday, I’ll let you know if that bet paid off. I’m just a bartender, so it may be above my paygrade, but I’m hoping (almost begging) that some of the tax revenue raised on betting in DC can be used to help my industry. (more…)

“Gun Violence Prevention Emergency Operations Center (EOC), launched as part of a new comprehensive gun violence prevention program, Building Blocks DC”

“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the launch of the Gun Violence Prevention Emergency Operations Center (EOC), as part of a new comprehensive gun violence prevention program, Building Blocks DC. The EOC, a first-of-its-kind in the nation to deploy a public health approach to gun violence prevention, is located in the heart of Historic Anacostia in Ward 8.

“Today we are recognizing the scourge of gun violence for what it is: a public health crisis that requires a whole-government approach focused on people and places in our community,” said Mayor Bowser. “Too many lives have been taken, too many families have been traumatized, and too many neighborhoods have been left broken. With Building Blocks DC, we are committing to reversing these trends, saving lives, and better supporting our residents and communities most impacted by gun violence.”

“We got a permit and have been told we need a “wall check”.

“Dear PoPville,

We are building a front porch on a DC rowhouse that originally had a porch but somewhere through the years it was removed. We got a permit and have been told we need a “wall check”. Contractor told us it has to be performed by a private surveyor and could cost $900-$2300.

I called DCRA to ask about this and the first answer they gave me was, no you can schedule that through us for free. So I called today to schedule and naturally, someone else gave me a different answer and had me send an email inquiring with the surveillance office. (more…)

DDOT further honors Frederick Douglass and Black History Month with the release of Frederick Douglass Builds a Bridge, an interactive video for school-aged children that explains the process of building a bridge.
