From the Mayor’s Office:

“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser continues to encourage District residents, workers, and visitors to take advantage of free COVID-19 testing with Test Yourself DC, a program offering at-home COVID-19 testing kits at locations around the District. The program offers the option to either take a COVID-19 test on-site at one of the 16 locations or to drop off their test sample at the closest DC Library drop box at no cost. (more…)

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that vaccination against COVID-19 will be a requirement for all DC Government employees who work in agencies that report to the Mayor. Employees will have until Sunday, September 19, 2021 to meet the job requirement of being fully vaccinated.

Approximately 36,700 people are employed by DC Government, including employees of the Council of the District of Columbia and the Office of the Chief Financial Officer. To date, 21,746 employees have reported their vaccination status to the DC Department of Human Resources. Of the employees who have responded, approximately 19,907 employees, or about 54% of the total workforce, reported being fully vaccinated.

While this vaccination requirement applies to employees who work in agencies that report to the Mayor, which includes approximately 32,700 employees, all independent agencies are highly encouraged to adopt the requirement.

The COVID-19 vaccines remain a critical tool for saving lives, reducing the severity of the illness in infected people, and stopping the spread of COVID-19. Severe illness from COVID-19 is rare in fully vaccinated people. From January 2021 when less than 1% of the total DC population was fully vaccinated to June 2021 when over 50% of the total DC population was fully vaccinated, DC has seen a 95% decline in COVID-related deaths.

Additionally, last month, Mayor Bowser and DC Health released comprehensive data about breakthrough COVID-19 cases in DC that underscores the effectiveness of the vaccines in preventing illness, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19. Current data shows that of the approximately 300,000 fully vaccinated individuals, DC has recorded only 546 breakthrough cases, or just 0.18% of all fully vaccinated individuals. (more…)

From the Mayor’s Office yesterday:

“Today, the Council of the District of Columbia unanimously approved Mayor Bowser’s Fiscal Year 2022 spending plan – the District’s 26th consecutive balanced budget. Following the Council’s vote, the Mayor released the following statement:

“This budget is transformational, as it is a $17.5 billion investment in a more equitable DC, and an opportunity to give more Washingtonians a fair shot. It allows us to meet the moment we are facing by making the biggest investments in the residents and local businesses hit hardest by the health and economic crises of the past 17 months. By combining once-in-a-lifetime federal and stable local revenue, we are able to make historic investments in our city’s greatest challenges. (more…)

From the Office of Council Member Charles Allen:

“In response to a request for $11 million for additional funding for police officers from Mayor Bowser, D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson and Councilmember Charles Allen, Chair of the Council’s Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety, are proposing a compromise package of investments, with support from a majority of the Council.

The package was circulated today by Chairman Mendelson in an Amendment in the Nature of a Substitute (ANS) to the budget legislation to be considered at tomorrow’s final vote.

The changes would revise the Executive’s requested $11 million enhancement for sworn police officers to instead reduce gun violence by investing in both traditional law enforcement and public-health based programs. (more…)
