Just watched the garbage pickup folks skip the Christmas trees on a regular pickup day for the second time. The mayor’s press release said they were supposed to start taking them on 1/3. Is that not happening anymore?
Update on this! A neighbor chased down the sanitation workers and they stated that households have to put in a request thru the 311 app in order to get trees picked up (more…)

“Tonight, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that on Thursday, January 20, DC Public Schools (DCPS) will open on a two-hour delay. Students previously scheduled to learn virtually should also plan to log into virtual classes two hours later than their scheduled time.
DC Government will open on time.
Vaccination and COVID-19 testing sites, including the new COVID Centers, will open on time. (more…)

“Today, Mayor Bowser and DC Health announced the opening of four new COVID Centers with four additional locations opening Monday, January 24. The COVID Centers represent the District’s long-term commitment to expanding access to COVID-19 vaccinations, boosters, and testing opportunities by providing fixed locations with longer hours.
“Getting vaccinated, getting boosted, getting tested, and wearing our masks is how we will get through this,” said Mayor Bowser. “With the COVID Centers, we are doubling down on our commitment to equity and accessibility and ensuring we have the systems in place to support a long-term response that can be dialed-up or down and quickly modified to meet our community’s needs.”
At the COVID Centers, individuals will have access to vaccinations, boosters, and take-home rapid antigen tests as well as a new walk-up testing opportunity which will allow residents to administer and register a PCR test themselves.
COVID Centers in Wards 1, 2, 7, and 8 will open today at 1:00 p.m. and stay open until 8:00 p.m. COVID Centers in Wards 3, 4, 5 and 6 will open Monday, January 24. More information on the four sites opening next week will be shared later this week. All sites will be open six days a week, and sites will rotate off days so that on any day of the week multiple COVID Centers will be open across DC. “Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Office of the Deputy Mayor of Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) announced a new $1.5 million direct cash transfer pilot program, Strong Families, Strong Future DC, to support maternal health and advance economic mobility. The nonprofit organization Martha’s Table will implement the program, which will provide $900 per month for one year to 132 new and expectant mothers in Wards 5, 7, and 8. (more…)

“Today, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and the Office of Public-Private Partnerships (OP3) announce that Plenary Infrastructure DC (PIDC) is the preferred bidder for the DC Smart Street Lighting project. This $309 million project is the District’s first-ever public private partnership (P3), will modernize streetlights, and is the nation’s largest urban streetlight modernization project using the P3 model. “Ten thousand D.C. residents who experienced the longest delays in receiving unemployment compensation received an extra $500 payment last week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. The $500 wasn’t from Santa, but from a provision put in the Fiscal Year 2022 budget by the D.C. Council’s Committee on Labor and Workforce Development, which stipulated that the 10,000 unemployment compensation claimants with the longest waits receive the extra money. (more…)

From the Mayor’s Office last night:
“Mayor Bowser also announced that Safe Return operations at DC Public Schools (DCPS) will shift one day. Schools will be closed on Monday, January 3. DCPS staff should report their COVID-19 test results before 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 4. DCPS students must now test on Wednesday, January 5. Families can pick up their rapid antigen test on Tuesday, January 4 between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. or on Wednesday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Schools are scheduled to re-open on Thursday, January 6.
District Government will operate in a telework posture for non-essential/non-emergency employees. Essential employees will report for duty as previously scheduled, unless otherwise directed. All in-person programming at DC Government agencies will be closed. Virtual appointments and online services will continue unless otherwise stated.
Test Yourself DC at-home PCR tests and Test Yourself Express rapid tests will be available for pick-up on Monday, January 3 from 2:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. (or until supplies run out) at four firehouses:
Engine 4 at 2531 Sherman Ave NW
Engine 8 at 1520 C St SE
Engine 31 at 4930 Connecticut Ave NW
Engine 33 is located at 101 Atlantic St SE
All other testing sites will be closed. Residents will still be able to drop off Test Yourself DC tests at drop boxes at libraries and recreation centers before 8:00 p.m. Engines 4, 8, 31, and 33 will also accept Test Yourself DC drop-offs on January 3 during the hours listed above.
Meal distribution sites at DCPS and Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) facilities will be closed.
Trash, recycling, and Christmas tree collections will “slide” to the next day for the remainder of the week into Saturday. For example, households that normally receive trash/recycling collections on Monday will be serviced Tuesday.
While the snow emergency is in effect, motorists may not park on snow emergency routes and vehicles parked on these routes may be towed. (more…)
