“Dear PoPville,
Just a car driving southbound 107 MPH through 9th and O ST NW [see video below at about 13 seconds.] Drove through three red lights (mid cycle) at P, O, and N street, for good measure. This behavior makes me livid.
In May of last year I requested–via established channels and protocol–that DDOT install speeding cameras and red light cameras at this intersection. I got sign-off from the ANC and from the ANC transportation committee for DDOT to conduct a traffic study. And then DDOT slow-rolled and did nothing.
So. How the h*** do we turn a video of a car going 107 MPH through three red lights in a row, into something…anything. I tried doing the right thing and nothing. Oh, and in 2016 someone was struck and killed by a car driver at 9th and P (background of video). Driver had previous speeding violations. And here’s a high-speed crash from last year, too.
Ideas??? Who do we need to prod and how?
Methodology:
Initially, I estimated the car’s madcap speed as 70 MPH (as seen from my apartment window). But then I did the calculations. Video frame rate is 20 fps. Distance from crosswalk to building on the far left is 156 feet, traversed in 1.0 seconds (20 frames). That’s 107 MPH.
Car also averaged about 88 MPH between P and O St NW. Google maps measures it as 388 feet, the car travels the distance in about 3.0 seconds.
Check my calculations. Camera points NNW. Chercher and Maxwell wine bar in the center.”
