The following was written by PoPville contributor David McAuley, founder of Short Articles about Long Meetings.

“The original proposal (left) and revision (right). From documents distributed at the committee meeting.”

A committee of Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 2F/Logan Circle has endorsed a dramatic downsizing of a planned new residential project at 1126 9th Street NW, across from the west side of Washington Convention Center. Representatives of the developers came before ANC2F’s Community Development Committee July 25 to request ANC endorsement of a revision to the project’s Planned Unit Development (PUD). The new plan, if approved, would reduce the number of new residential units from 33 to 15, and the height of the tallest part of the building from 10 floors to six floors. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to give you a bit of background on the development at the corner of 2nd and S Sts NW. Late last year this church was sold to Kadida Development for the purpose of redeveloping the site into 8 townhomes – after numerous hearings including an attempt by folks who are not directly impacted by the construction to designate the church “historic” the project won approval and the developer started to move ahead with demo of the site – in his defense he has kept me and other directly impacted neighbors up to speed about how the project will go…and in spite of a few issues things have been ok. The impacted neighbors have asked for a few things that the developer has not provided – proof of insurance, finalized plans, promises about easements and a few other things that I will not bother going into. All in all this was going somewhat according to plan…until last weekend. (more…)

In response to a large police presence in Mount Pleasant Friday night, MPD responded:

“an MPD unit assigned to the area observed two rival gangs at the location. One of the gang members was surrounded by several members of the rival gang and the officer, believing that a fight was about to take place, requested additional units to respond to the location. No fight ever took place and the gang members were identified and sent on their way. No arrests were made during the incident. During the stop, several residents took out their cell phones and began recording the incident while shouting statements like “Leave the immigrants alone” and “Please don’t take them away”. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I write to you to highlight what appears to be a systemic problem and/or waste of resources by the D.C. Housing Authority and its employees at their headquarters, located at 1133 North Capitol St. NE in NoMa.

Although the Housing Authority has two parking lots (an open lot in the front of their building and a gated lot behind as noted in some of the pictures, in addition to paid parking in lots at 44-88 M St NE), the Housing Authority routinely and consistently parks their DC government vehicles in metered spots on both M St NE and Pierce St NE. “In DC ticket hell, car parked in a legit spot to go on a work trip, was ticketed for violating rush hour zone (no signs), towed to an illegitimate spot where I was ticketed and towed again. 4 tickets and $400 dollars later, no email response from @charlesallen or ANC. Any advice?” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Any idea what the deal is w the sidewalks being extended up 14th and the curb cuts being no where near the crosswalks? This is the south east corner of RI/14th NW. you can see how a person who needs the ramp vs stepping off the curb needs to basically go into where the cars are idling at the light.”

“Dear PoPville,

So my car was towed from 13th and Kenyon NW because a house on the block is being remodeled. I called DPW and they said the car was located at the 1300 block of Park Rd. I walked up and down that block about 6 times pressing the panic button [ed. note: for the car to honk] and no dice. Repeated calls to DPW have resulted in their INSISTING the car is on that block, which it is not. They’re now at the point of hanging up on me when I call so I’m walking around Columbia heights pressing the panic button on my car key hoping by some miracle to find it. It’s a silver Kia Sportage with temporary VA tags. This is kind of my last ditch effort before reporting it stolen.”

Ed. Note: If somebody does happen to catch this hail mary please email me, [email protected], where you saw it and I’ll pass on to OP. Or of course post in the comments – thank you.

“Dear PoPville,

It would be great if you could share this information on a bill pending with DC council’s committee of the whole. The bill can be found here.

This bill proposes a penalty of up to $300 and/or up to 10 days in jail for anyone who amplifies noise beyond 80 decibels as heard in the nearest occupied residence. 80 decibels is equivalent to a propeller plane flying 1,000 feet above your home.

I’d encourage everyone to reach out through the below avenues to voice their opposition against this bill. Jail time for nuisance violations is not a good use of tax payer funds. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

What kind of labor safeguards do we have in DC for those who toil outside in such dangerously high temperatures?”

Related from DPW:

“Summer has arrived in the District and so has the hot weather. With this in mind, trash and recycling crews from the Department of Public Works (DPW) will be starting their daily collection routes one hour earlier at 6 am, beginning Tuesday, July 3. The earlier collection time will remain in effect for the entire summer, ending Monday, September 3.”

Continuing Coverage of Council Member Jack Evans’ Driving and Parking Continues.

“Dear PoPville,

I was driving to dinner last night (my wife took the photos) and lo-and behold Jack Evans cut me off; I saw that he was talking on his cell phone then he pulled over into a no parking zone – parked – and walked into Washington Square. (more…)
