From the office of Councilmember Christina Henderson:

“Councilmember Henderson introduced the E911 Modernization Amendment Act of 2025. The bill would enhance resources for the District’s emergency response telecommunications system, with the goal of creating a safer and more responsive public safety system.

“Each year, the Office of Unified Communications (OUC) handles hundreds of thousands of emergency and non-emergency calls which are supported through the District’s Emergency and Non-Emergency Number Telephone Calling Systems Fund,” said Councilmember Henderson. “While this fund has provided a critical foundation for OUC, across the country jurisdictions are transitioning to Next Generation 911 (NG911), which enables voice, text, photos, video, and precise geolocation. These capabilities are essential for ensuring residents can reach emergency services using communication methods they rely on every day and require our 911 services to evolve to match the pace of the nation.”

The proposed legislation would modernize 911 and 311 telecommunication systems, helping the District remain a leader in emergency response technology and service delivery by ensuring critical upgrades that require dedicated funding are met.

Specifically, the E911 Modernization Amendment Act of 2025 would: (more…)

“Attorney General Brian Schwalb announced today that his office, along with a coalition of 24 state law enforcement agencies, is joining a lawsuit previously filed by the Federal Trade Commission against Uber Technologies, LLC and Uber USA, LLC (Uber), the operators of the rideshare and delivery company. The lawsuit alleges that Uber used numerous deceptive and unfair practices in offering and selling its Uber One subscription service, which the company promotes as saving users money on rides and deliveries. However, the coalition alleges that Uber violated consumer protection laws in multiple ways, including by enrolling users without their consent, charging users for subscriptions before their free trials ended, preventing them from cancelling their subscriptions, and misleading users about savings. More than 100,000 DC residents are Uber One subscribers. (more…)

Statement from Mayor Bowser on Chief Smith

“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief Pamela A. Smith will be stepping down and released the following statement:

“When Chief Smith stepped up to lead the Metropolitan Police Department, we had no time to waste. She came in at a very challenging time for our community, when there was significant urgency to reverse the crime trends our city was facing post pandemic. Within a year of her tenure, we opened the Real-Time Crime Center. We deployed newer and better technology. We worked with the Council to pass comprehensive legislation that prioritizes accountability. And Chief Smith got all of this done while also navigating unprecedented challenges and attacks on our city’s autonomy.

“Chief Smith dramatically drove down violent crime, drove down the homicide rate to its lowest levels in eight years, and helped us restore a sense of safety and accountability in our neighborhoods. We are grateful for her service to Washington, DC.”
