“Dear PoPville,

I witnessed a theft/robbery near Le Diplomate (14th and Q NW) this afternoon [Wednesday] at about 4:45. A young man broke the window of a construction van, grabbed the spare keys out of a backpack inside, and attempted to drive off with the van. One of the van’s owners ran up as this was happening and the would-be-carjacker jumped out of the van and ran north on the alley behind Le Diplomate (parallel to 14th).

The thief stole the van owner’s black leather backpack, which contained both his old and new passport, which he had just picked up today in preparation for a trip he is taking on Friday morning, as well as his business checkbook and important business notes and documents.

Multiple Shots Fired 10:20pm in Brightwood Park, One Man and Multiple Vehicles Struck

“On Wednesday, August 15, 2018, at approximately 10:20 pm, MPD were in the area of 4th-7th, Longfellow-Jefferson Streets, NW, when they heard the sounds of gunshots.

Thus far, one victim of a shooting was located in the 500 block of Longfellow St NW and a there was property damage reported to several vehicles within the adjacent block.

The victim, an adult male, was transported to an area hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds and is listed in serious condition.

Racine today announced multiple actions against several residential and commercial property owners to end concentrated drug- and firearm-related activity taking place at their buildings. The Office of Attorney General (OAG) reached court-ordered settlements that require owners of two apartment buildings and two businesses in Deanwood to put in place strong new building security measures. In four new lawsuits, OAG is seeking to ensure the owners secure four apartment buildings in Anacostia, Eckington and Petworth to end drug- and gun-related nuisances. (more…)

“On August 14, 2018 – The Fourth District units responded to a shooting in the 3200 block Mount Pleasant Street, NW at 8:45 pm

2 victims were located – both suffering from a gunshot wound

The victims were transported to a medical facility.

“The Third District is currently investigating a shooting that occurred near the 1200 block of M Street, NW. An adult victim suffered a single gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

“Scammers primarily rely on two types of rental scams:

  • Hijacked listings: A hijacked listing copies a legitimate advertisement–photos, location, description–and posts it on another website with different contact information. This type of scam seems legitimate because it mimics a real property, but the person you are communicating with is a scammer, not the owner.
  • Phantom rentals: A phantom rental is a listing that uses photos of a property that is not located at the advertised address. This scam attempts to steal your money or information before you find out the property does not exist.

Both types of these scams lure renters with extremely low rental prices and lavish amenities. Once they have your attention, they request money (such as an application fee) or financial information for the property they cannot deliver. Victims sometimes don’t even realize they have been cheated until they show up to the property and find that it does not exist or is not for rent.

“Terrifying Petworth Incident”

“Dear PoPville,

Last week, my family endured a terrifying incident in Petworth that I wanted to share. Early Wednesday, August 8, there were gun shots in the immediate vicinity of our house, which while less common than it used to be, is sadly not that unusual. Moments later, a man ran into our backyard from the alley and promptly kicked down our back lower basement door. I was able to get in between him and our main stairs on our ground floor and tackled him to prevent him from getting upstairs where my children and wife were hiding. The man was shot twice in the abdomen (I think) and stopped trying to get upstairs. The police were there within minutes and took the man away on a stretcher.

I can’t prove it, but I am nearly certain that this man, who I don’t know and had never seen before, is associated with a house a block away that has long been connected with the drug trade. (more…)

“On 8/11/18 at approximately 2310 hours, First District officers were flagged down in the 300 block of 13th St NE for a robbery just occurred. An adult female victim was walking southbound on 13th St NE when she crossed paths with an adult male suspect. The suspect grabbed the victim’s purse, trying to snatch it. The purse was strapped around her body and she tried to pull away. However, when the victim realized that the suspect was armed with a knife, she surrendered her property. Yesterday morning I was assaulted by another woman while I running (9:20am) at the corner of 8 and Q St, NW. The woman was in front of me, and as I went to pass her on the left, she stuck out her foot and tripped me,

Then pushing me into the short metal fence. She also proceeded to yell at me and insult me for basically just running. (more…)

“According to charging documents filed in D.C. Superior Court, Smith was riding his bike westbound in the center lane in the 3100 block of M Street.

The driver was in his car behind Smith and became angry that Smith was riding slowly, according to police. As the driver went past Smith, police said, Smith reached out and hit his car trunk with an object.

The driver then stopped his car and threatened to call police to report the damage. As Smith tried to pedal away, the driver grabbed Smith’s bike, police said. Smith then repeatedly called the driver the racial slur, police said, and struck him in the head with the bicycle U-lock.”
