“Dear PoPville,

I’m reaching out as a resident of the 15th Street NE corridor, bordering ANC 6A06 and 7D06, to raise urgent concerns about public safety conditions that are deteriorating rapidly in a neighborhood made up largely of young families. Many with children under the age of five.

Over the past several months, and especially in recent weeks, our community has experienced escalating gun violence, open drug activity, and other dangerous conditions that are now part of daily life. Just this week, there were seven separate shooting incidents in a single night, between 10 PM and 4 AM. That followed a recent morning shooting at 8:30 AM, while children were walking to nearby Miner preschool and elementary school. Some had to run for cover inside their school building.

In addition to the gun violence, we are regularly witnessing: (more…)

From the office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton:

“After receiving conflicting information from officials regarding the use of ADS-B transponders, a type of transponder used to communicate GPS data and project aircraft trajectory, in helicopter flights in the National Capital Region (NCR), Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) wrote Department of Transportation (DoT) Secretary Sean Duffy on Friday urging DoT to prohibit the use of helicopters for these flights in the NCR, except for the president, vice president, and in certain emergencies. A U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter from the Army Aviation Brigade at Fort Belvoir and a passenger plane collided in D.C. airspace on January 29, killing 67 people. The helicopter was not using its ADS-B transponder when the collision occurred. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Reaching out to clarify the questions/comments that you get every year during National Police Week (this week, and ends today 5/16). The motorcades carry the families of police officers who have died in the line of duty. Part of police week includes visiting the National Law Enforcement Officer’s memorial, where family members go to see their officer’s names newly engraved.

In addition, please note that an extremely large percentage of the folks on those buses are families of NYPD officers whose line of duty death was cancer (receiving the diagnosis as a result of working in lower manhattan during the clean up from the mass terror attack on September 11th, 2001).

I was on one of those buses last year.”
