From the Mayor’s Office:

“Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief Robert J. Contee III announced the Violent Crime Impact Team (VCIT), a collaborative effort between local and federal partners to remove illegal firearms from the community and apprehend armed criminals. The focus of VCIT is to reduce violent crime by using more intelligence-driven operations and enhance our investigative abilities through federal agency partnerships.

“We cannot allow people to terrorize our communities with guns,” said Mayor Bowser. “This is about using a whole-of-government approach, but it’s also about focusing our attention and resources on exactly where we know the problem is. Our message is clear – we will continue to offer people in our city a better path forward, but if people choose to engage in violence, then they will be held accountable.”

The Violent Crime Impact Team is a joint partnership established by MPD with our federal partners at the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). (more…)

After overcoming the initial shock my wife asked, “Does this count as a Helluva Way To Wake Up In The Morning?”

“Dear PoPville,

On Monday April 11, [the victim] was attacked in the alley next to his house. This happened at about 9:30pm with a 5 year old inside. The specifics are especially brutal: several years ago, at the beginning of Covid, they put up an adjustable basketball hoop on the back of the deck in the large alley for use by the family’s two young children and the many kids in the neighborhood that were eager for something to pass the time. They have always enjoyed having the court well-trafficked by local kids with no issues.

On the 11th, three teenagers and at least one younger child came to the alley at dusk to play. [The victim] went out and adjusted the hoop for them as he often does as a kindness and got out the basketballs he keeps on hand. He asked them to be sure to stop playing at dark so he could get his child to bed without noise. At 930 they were still playing so when the child complained, [the victim] went out to ask them to stop. I note here that he is not an imposing presence and is soft-spoken by nature. He walked halfway down the stairs to the alley asking them calmly to wrap it up, but was almost instantly jumped by the largest teen there. What we have pieced together from the blood trail, his injuries, and police discussions is that he was knocked out by the first punch, (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Was at Cracked Eggery [Friday during the shootings.] After Byblos and Uptown Vision had their windows hit I went to leave in my car. Was parked on NB side of Connecticut. Discovered a flat tire. Long story short the Tesla center replaced it and they found a 9mm bullet in the tire. Spoke to DC police and sounds like it was connected to the shooting. There must have been a lot of bullets that traveled very far as a result of this.”

Ed. Note: I stopped by the 3400 block of Connecticut Ave, NW in Cleveland Park to see the damage and it truly is a miracle more people weren’t injured: (more…)
