915 U Street, NW

Another painful blow to what once was fell last week. Velvet Lounge posted on IG:

“Thank you so much for all the years of love. We are closing the physical establishment for good but we’d just like to say thank you and leave you with this. Please keep you head up and continue to try your best, you gave us some of your most beautiful years so thank you. @velvetloungedc and everyone who was ever apart of that experience. The end of an ear.” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

One thing my fiancee and I have been discussing is our disappointment that we haven’t found a single bar around us (AdMo/DuPont/U Street area) that is checking vaccination cards. If there was one that only let in vaccinated people we’d frequent there and I’m guessing many others would do the same. Would love it if anyone had any suggestions to encourage this? Thanks!”

From The Sovereign:

“Dear PoPville,

With Covid starting to fade a bit here my dc based fantasy football leave is looking for somewhere to host a draft later this summer. I’m sure were not the only ones who after a year + of not really going anywhere we don’t have the slightest idea what bars/restaurants/other venues might allow us to hold a draft?”

Assuming your group is like 10-15 folks, I think you’d be ok at most spots, I’d ask at The Brig, Boundary Stone, Lou’s, Red Derby, Wundergarten, Electric Cool Aid, Solly’s, The Sandlots, Jackie Lee’s, Dacha, Bardo, Walters, Moreland’s Tavern, man I’m getting thirsty… What would be some other good spots?

Ed. Note: Regarding the olympic rings pictured above, from NBC Universal: “The “Rings Across America” experience will open to the public from 11am-8pm on Monday and will also be open on Tuesday from 10am-6pm.”

“Dear PoPville,

The Tokyo Olympic opening ceremonies are airing at 7am ET on Friday because of the time difference. Are any bars in DC opening early for a viewing party? Not saying I’ll necessarily want a beer that early (Or maybe I will. Game time decision.), but it would be nice to watch with a crowd.”

One email I got from Commissary (but please add your recs in the comments):

“Logan Circle favorite neighborhood restaurant, Commissary (1443 P Street NW), will open at 7 am on Friday, July 23 with all TVs and a big screen showing the Summer Olympic Games opening ceremonies. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

One of my bosses is leaving. My other boss wants to find an outdoor bar, with dancing, somewhere near a metro for the farewell (with all vaccinated people). Yes, this is a difficult ask. Also yes, this will be an incredibly awkward bar hang. Can your readers help me identify some places that won’t make me cringe too much?”
