Lots of exciting changes coming to Barracks Row on 8th St, SE. Yesterday we learned about more Bike options and I forgot to mention next door to City Bikes is some progress on the Hello Cupcake at 705 8th St, SE:

And last weekend I noticed some workers on the 2nd floor of Lola’s at 711 8th St, SE. Stay tuned for lots more news from that strip in the coming months.

Lot of news coming out of Adams Morgan this week. And even more BBQ news this week.

Yesterday I received a panicked email from a reader titled, “Asylum leaving top space?!” citing a brief City Paper post via The 42.

For those not familiar with Asylum it is one of the older bars in Adams Morgan located at 2471 18th St, NW that has been around since 1991 – from their Website:

Asylum offers a vegetarian/vegan friendly food menu, daily drink specials, an internet jukebox, and live entertainment in a low-key atmosphere. Happy hour runs from 5-8pm daily that includes $1 off rail drinks and draft beers, .50 wings and $1.50 tacos. Asylum offers meat selections as well, a great place to go to satisfy everyone’s palate.

Best known for the vegan brunch on Saturdays and Sundays, please come by from 11-4pm and enjoy the weekend chef specials and our house-made bloody mary’s, vegan huevos rancheros, pancakes and French toast. Voted best vegan brunch by VegDC.com and Best of Washington. The Saturday Natty Light countdown is legendary.

On Wed. afternoon I had the opportunity to talk with Asylum owner (and Meridian Pint owner) John Andrade to get all the details.

So first of all it is true that changes are on the way – Asylum will be rebranding the upstairs bar. But for those concerned that another jumbo slice purveyor would be filling the space, fear not, it is going to become a craft beer establishment featuring BBQ. But perhaps equally important is that Asylum the bar will remain in the basement space.

All the details including a chance to win a $1000 credit to the upstairs bar after the jump. (more…)

The great Sankofa Cafe located at 2714 Georgia Ave, NW has applied for a liquor license. The liquor license says:

“New Tavern, Live Entertainment and a Summer Garden.
Total Seating is 86, Total Occupancy Load is 136, Summer Garden 40 seats.”

The trend of coffee shops getting liquor licenses continues. Do you think it makes sense for coffee bars to sell alcohol? I can only think of a few coffee bars left that haven’t applied for liquor licenses…yet.

And in other Georgia Ave news, I don’t know if I’m just noticing this for the first time but the sign below for Nati Hokah Bar at 2839 Georgia Ave, NW seems new to me. Anyone know if that is a new or old sign?

We first learned that the Black Squirrel, located at 2427 18th Street, NW, would be opening up their basement bar back in May ’09. They official opened last Thurs. After visiting the new space last night, I can confidently say – it was worth the wait. The place looks fantastic with one of the biggest bars I’ve ever seen at nearly 56 feet.

The downstairs bar will be known at the Tap Room and as it sounds will offer tons of beer options. Though there are bar snacks (menu after the jump) if you want to order from their proper food menu – you’ll need to eat upstairs. As you would imagine with a 56 foot bar, downstairs, the focus is the beer. You can see their full beer list here. In the front of the space they’ll also be showcasing local musicians.

Anyone check it out yet?

More photos after the jump. (more…)

Iron Horse opened up back in Jan. ’10 at 507 7th Street, NW in Penn Quarter. While they don’t serve food, I’m curious what folks think about the space as a bar – any fans?

And a little side note scuttlebutt: I’m hearing that the owners have plans to open a nearby comedy club soon. Stay tuned for more info on that one.

“Dear PoP,

I thought you might like to know that I strolled by the BBQ place at 14th and S St, NW and they were open for the first time tonight [Friday]. The food looked pretty good (I didn’t try it, though, as I had already eaten) and they had Bell’s Two Hearted on tap – a personal favorite.”

Last Nov. we had an update on the new venture, Standard, which soft opened this weekend in the old, old Garden District space at the north east corner of 14th and S St, NW. At the time people were very optimistic. Based on the crowds (and smiles) I saw this Sunday afternoon – I’d say expectations were met. I stopped by last week to take a few photos of the inside but as you can see – the real appeal here is the amazing outdoor space. The beer options look good as does the bbq – but with weather like we had this weekend, this could be one of the best people watching spots in the city. Anyone happen to stop by this weekend?

After the jump lots more photos including the menu. (more…)

“Dear PoP,

I just have a question, (hypothetically of course) if a person gets a little too intoxicated and steals something from a bar and wants to give it back, will the bar be upset if the person returns it? Should the person anonymously return it or go in and own up to it and apologize? Will the bar press charges?”

I’m guessing that if the patron returned the item and apologized the bar would not press charges. What do you guys think?

Ed. Note: I offered to return the item for this person. Hell, if someone else has stolen something from a bar and feels awkward about giving it back – I’ll give it back for you and promise to keep you anonymous.

“Dear PoP,

I finally visited Star and Shamrock on H Street NE last weekend, and absolutely LOVED it. Friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere, great beer selection, and there’s Russian dressing right on the menu! However, I was kind of turned off by their beer coasters.

Similar to the Black Squirrel, I am not a fan of mixing political views with bars I visit. This just seemed odd to me and kind of put a bad taste in my mouth. I know you’re also a huge fan of this place and wanted to see if you knew about this.”

I wonder if this sorta thing is just inevitable in DC? I wonder if these coasters were dropped off and the managers/bartenders didn’t even see the political message. Personally, in this particular instance I’d much rather the bar stick to pouring a perfect Guinness and frying a perfect latke…

Back in Dec. ’10 we learned that Tonic was planning to expand into the vacant space below Radius at 3155 Mt. Pleasant St, NW. A reader sends in a quick update from The Feast:

“With about 30 seats, it’ll be more of a laid-back lounge with an emphasis on good drinks. “We’re going a little bit higher-end on the cocktails”, he says. “We’re not interested in doing the $25 cocktail, but really good quality, old-school drinks at a fair price”.”

The Last Exit Web site says:

“The entrance was dimly lit, but I knew exactly where to go. I could hear the laughter coming from outside the pocket door. Someone asks, “Is this where it is”? Clearly no one responds. If you must ask then the answer assumingly is no.”

You can take a look at some of the Cocktails here.

I stopped by Tonic on Tues. to check on the status, I was able to take a quick peek and there is still a good bit of construction that needs to be completed. Nevertheless, I was told that they are likely to open by the end of the month. I’ll be sure to update when an exact date is set. Despite the fact that the blurb from their Web site sounds like a J. Peterman ad written by Elaine Benes, I still think this has awesome potential.
