“Dear PoP,

I am the original poster who had the negative experience when the Blue Banana first opened. A lot of the commentors thought I didn’t give them a fair chance. I was hopeful that the owners would read my post and fix the issues. I’d like to do my part to promote them now if I can. I hope you post this or let them know they have a happy customer. My original complaints were:

1.) They didn’t have Direct TV as advertised – now they do
2.) There was no place to hang up my purse and jacket under the bar – now there are plenty of hooks
3.) The bathroom was gross with pubes and poop – this time it was VERY clean (even at midnight!)

The band (Bandylions) were really good. The place was packed and it looked like everyone was having a great time. The guy bartender gave me a fun dog fish coaster puzzle and my husband thought the girl bartender was hot. They were both really nice and efficient. The beer selection was great and the prices were reasonable. There was lots of Duke fans earlier in the night before the music started. (Nice win UNC.) I am looking forward to watching future March Madness games there in the very near future. If the owners are reading now, thanks for the great addition to the neighborhood. Cheers!”

Blue Banana, recently opened in Dec. ’10, is the sports bar located at 3632 Georgia Ave, NW next to Looking Glass Lounge south of the Petworth metro. When they first opened I received a number of negative emails and after posting one some neighbors went batshit crazy strongly disagreed. At the time I wrote:

“Personally, I think it’s a bit too early to tell but hopefully they make some adjustments after reading some constructive criticism. ”

I’m happy to hear that the original letter writer is now a fan. That section of Georgia Ave is ripe for (and has already seen some) more positive development. Have you had the chance to visit or revisit the Blue Banana? How were your experiences?

It’s great to round out sports bar week with a positive review.

Back in Jan. we learned that Touchdown would be replacing Momo’s Sports Bar and Codmother would be opening up on the ground level. I’m happy to report that Touchdown is opening up today and Codmother expects to open up in another month or so. I was able to attend a soft opening for Touchdown last night and snapped lots of photos.

For those familiar with the former Momo’s space – it is a very similar layout that feels much fresher and brighter. It continues to occupy two floors and the third floor space will likely feature some sorta music component but those plans weren’t revealed last night. But back to Touchdown, there is an ode to the 1924 Champion Senators and old baseball pictures cover many walls. But for soccer fans – fear not – there is still a DC United banner flying proudly.

You can see lots of photos including the menu after the jump but I just wanted to add one more cool feature from the bar – they are looking to include a bocce component in the nearby park on the 1300 block of V St, NW.

An email this morning lists some events for the Grand Opening today:

-UEFA Champions League:Arsenal vs. Barcelona 2:55p.m-5:00 p.m.
-NCAA Conference Tournaments All Day Long!!!!
-Happy Hour 3p.m.-7p.m.*(25% off Draft, Rail, and Food)
-Budweiser Power Hour 6p.m.-7p.m. Bud Girls, beads, Budweiser Buckets and we’re raffling off 2 tickets to D.C. United’s home opener!
-Bacardi Night Cap 9p.m.-11 p.m. Bacardi Girls, beads, Corona and Bacardi Limon shooters, and we’re raffling off 4 tickets to the Washington Wizards game on April 1, 2011!
-Happy Hour from Midnight-Close! *(25% off Draft, Rail, and Food!)

Believe me, it gives me no pleasure to ask this question. Back in Oct. ’10 we learned that The Hitching Post was for sale at 200 Upshur St, NW across from the Old Soldiers Home. The Hitching Post is of course an iconic little restaurant/bar that has been open since 1967. And despite the fact that there are many many fans, it is completely understandable that the owners, Mr. and Mrs. Carter would like to enjoy a retirement after almost 45 years of proprietorship. While some thought the Hitching Post had abandoned their plans when they renewed their liquor license, I’m sad to say plans have changed a little but only from the space being for sale to the space now being for lease.

I’ve been in touch with the Carter’s daughter who tells me that they are looking for rent of about $2500-$3000 per month. What do you think is a fair lease price? But her other question is even more intriguing – what would you guys like to see in the Hitching Post’s space? A bakery/cupcake spot? A different themed restaurant/bar? A deli? A wine bar? Keep it exactly the way it is?

Do you think it would be possible to retain the Hitching Post’s charm under different management/ownership?

A reader writes asking for fun suggestions for her 24 year old niece and friends, specifically, “suggestions for Mardi Gras fun just a few steps up from the body-shots, pukey, sticky-floor yob crowd.” Hahaha, I’m curious to hear your suggestions as well!

I’ll share a few suggestions emailed my way. Well first off, I’m sure New Orleans themed, Little Miss Whiskey’s will be pretty spectacular located at 1104 H Street NE. Also on H St, NE The Pug is celebrating Mardi Gras at 1234 H St, NE:

And in NW The Heights will be celebrating at 3115 14th Street NW:

Also in NW, and one of my personal favorites, the Red Derby located at 3718 14th St. NW will be celebrating their 3rd annual Mardi Gras:

“We’re gonna have 3$ Hurricanes and $5 Shrimp Po’ Boys. AND the DECK is OPEN!! WHoooo”

Back in mid-Feb. we took a very early look at Lou’s City Bar, the sports bar, coming to 1400 Irving St, NW (just west of 14th Street.) I was able to stop by on Sunday to snap some updated photos (finishing touches were still taking place.) While you’ll see a couple of soft openings this week the official opening is this Thursday. And while I’ll share lots of photos (including the menu) after the jump I just wanted to point out two very cool things:

First, every Wed. will be half priced draft beers on all drafts.

Second, there are tons of booths! I’m a huge fan.

Now that you can see the space will all the tvs and furniture – what are your initial thoughts?

Whenever I have complications running the site I think back to days like this visit and remember how lucky I really am. Last Thursday I was able to check out the soon to be in production DC Brau Brewery on Bladensburg Rd in NE. Some may recall that previously I also was able to visit the Chocolate City Beer nanobrewery in Brookland/Edgewood. Considering the craft beer bar scene has recently taken off in DC it is no wonder that, after an absence of 50 years, the return of DC’s local breweries isn’t far behind.

I hitched a ride with the crew from Meridian Pint and a bartender from Red Derby over to DC Brau’s warehouse. We were given a tour by CEO Brandon Skall and President/Head Brewer Jeff Hancock. Ed. Note: I find the first the question I ask people I meet is “what neighborhood do you live in?” – Skall lives in Bloomingdale and Hancock lives in Columbia Heights. After taking a tour we learned that DC Brau will initially be producing 3 beers starting with the Public Ale.

According to their Web site:

The Public™ is a delicious easy drinking pale ale made from a simple recipe of quality grain and top notch American hops. Tawny hues of caramel and amber are a trademark of the Public ale as well as a delicious spruce crispness resulting from a beautiful abundance of hops! This beer will be produced throughout the year and serves as the foundation of our product line.

Coming soon:
The Citizen™ (a Belgian-style pale ale) and the The Corruption™ (our IPA)

DC Brau already has 38 written letters of intent from bars to serve their beer and over 100 verbal requests from bars in DC and northern Virginia. While hesitant to give an exact date, Skall and Hancock, expect that Public Ale will be available in both stores and bars around the end of April.

A bit more background is also provided on their Web site:

Enter Brandon Skall and Jeff Hancock, two D.C. residents who, as music fans, avid bar goers, and enthusiastic men-about-town, are acutely aware of the empty tap handle or store shelf where a local beer ought to be found. These two men, sharing years of experience in both brewing and beverage distribution, are uniquely equipped to fill this void and thus have decided to combine their knowledge and passion to found the DC Brau Brewing Company. With extensive experience in restaurant management and the beverage industry, Brandon will handle sales duties and the business of the brewery. With extensive experience in the commercial brewing industry, Jeff will be the Brewmaster. Since serving an apprenticeship at Franklin’s Restaurant and Brewery in Hyattsville, Maryland, Jeff has brewed at Grizzly Peak Brewing and Arbor Brewing companies, both in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and at Flying Dog Brewery in Frederick, Maryland. With their individual talents and a shared love for the city, Brandon and Jeff form a perfect team to bring a delicious, locally brewed beer to the consumers of D.C.

I gotta say I don’t know a whole lot about the science behind brewing beer but to the layperson, the warehouse looks awesome (lots more photos after the jump.) It is around 7,000 square feet and at first will soon be producing 400 kegs a month (not to mention the cans). And while I don’t know a lot about the beer production process (besides consuming it) the folks from Meridian Pint and Red Derby who do know a lot were equally excited and enthusiastic. After talking to Skall and Hancock, it is clear that DC Brau is much more than just a business idea – it is their passion. And if there’s anything I’ve learned after observing and talking with some of DC’s entrepreneurs – it is that the truly passionate ones are almost always the successful ones.

Keep your eyes peeled for DC Brau in your neighborhood grocery/corner stores as well as bars around the end of April.

Full Disclosure: Meridian Pint is a PoP advertiser and the folks from DC Brau gave me a t-shirt.

Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

The old Bloomingdale Firehouse is located at 1626 North Capitol Street, NW. I was happy to see some improvements when I walked by last weekend. You can see what it used to look like here. And in really good timing a reader commented earlier today:

“I attended the Bloomingdale ANC meeting last night were the developers of the Firehouse were there to pitch their alcohol license and said the first floor restaurant will be open for July 4th and the second floor tavern will be open by Aug 1, and the third floor would come after that. Go Bloomingdale!!!!!”

Though I thought it was interesting that another reader commented a dissenting opinion a couple days ago. He wrote:

“I live on Quincy near the firehouse and I don’t (a) want a gigantic late night restaurant right on top of me, and (b) don’t think one would succeed.

Let’s take Saint Ex, for example, which is a restaurant on a corner. It’s decent sized and it probably does a good business. But what happens if you were to triple the size of it and put it in an area that with way less street parking and way less foot traffic. I’d say it’s a bad bet.

Also, given what it took for the alcohol approvals at Big Bear, would it take any less to get a license for that spot? I’m not being facetious. Does someone know?

Anyway, when I saw the construction, I thought “condos.” But that was before I saw this stuff about the blight designation. Maybe the best thing for him is to do the minimum amount of work to hold onto the space until the neighborhood can sustain a restaurant that size–if that is what he really wants.”

More updates as they become available.

This past weekend, I was introduced to a few more changes at the Red Derby, located at 3718 14th St, NW (at Quincy). In the backroom the pool table has been removed and Big Buck Hunter and Golden Tee video games have been added along with more lounge like seating. Do you prefer the video games and more seating or the pool table? The dart board remains!

A couple more shots after the jump including an artistic series titled “life cycle of a mimosa (more…)
