From Meridian Pint [11th and Park Rd, NW]:

“We will open for LUNCH at noon. We will be offering 3 different $5 to help out those who are about to receive a smaller paycheck. We will also be offering a 10% to those who can provide a Federal ID from 12-5pm.”

From Sixth and I [6th and I St, NW]:

“As a government shutdown looms, Sixth & I is opening its doors to affected employees and anyone else who needs a place to hang out during this period of uncertainty. Should a shutdown go into effect, Shutdown Central will begin Tuesday, October 1 at 10:00 am and be open each weekday until an agreement is reached.

Government employees comprise a significant portion of Sixth & I’s community so we wanted to make sure that they had a place to go should they be affected, generating the idea behind Shutdown Central.

Throughout the day, there will be Political Ping Pong (red versus blue, with photos of certain government officials on the paddles), bipartisan board games, reading materials, constant streaming of The West Wing, and an informal meeting space with all of the essentials for non-essentials—free coffee, food, and Wifi.”

Lots more after the jump. (more…)

I was psyched to see coming soon signage posted for Right Proper Brewing Company:

Back in June we noted Right Proper had applied for a liquor license.  We also noted they were begining to build out their front windows with copper edges.  Now you can see the space is really looking amazing.  It’s located right next to the Howard Theatre east of 7th Street.  Their website says they should open this Fall.  Stay tuned.

From an email:

“For at least this weekend and next, donut holes are good for you. And good for penguins. And the Penguin Counters. A three-fer! Count yourself in!

Antarctic penguins are the region’s “canaries in the coal mine.” And for almost 20-years, Ron Naveen, a modern-day Dr. Dolittle, has been counting them, studying the health of three penguin species and their colonies. His work, the Antarctic Site Inventory, has helped instruct polar policies and research of countless scientists and members of the Antarctic Treaty Organization.

World-renown Besthesda-based film documentarians, Peter Getzels and Harriet Gordon, recently followed Ron Naveen and his Penguin Counters to the Antarctic, producing more than 70-hours of footage on their work and the amazing animals, sights and sounds of the Antarctic. Now it is time to take the footage and create a movie to tell this important story.

The Penguin Counters Movie is a labor of love, not money. To continue their work, Peter and Harriet have set up a Kickstarter Campaign to raise the funds necessary to put the movie together and submit it to film festivals worldwide. October 10th is the final day for donations. As with all Kickstarter campaigns, it is all or nothing.

The Pinch [3548 14th Street, NW] is very pleased to join this effort to help ensure the Penguin Counters story is told. The weekends of September 28th/29th and October 5th/6th, The Pinch will donate $5 for every order of donut holes to the Penguin Counters kickstarter campaign.”

Last month we learned Ivy and Coney:

““Opening in Fall 2013, Ivy and Coney will be a small, neighborhood bar located at 1537 7th St NW in the Shaw neighborhood in Washington, D.C. It brings the atmosphere of a Chicago corner bar with Detroit prices and Midwestern hospitality to our ever-diverse capital. The spot comes from Kangaroo Boxing Club owners Josh Saltzman and Chris Powers (originally from Chicago and Detroit), bartender Adam Fry (Chicago) and native Washingtonian, Jamie Hess.

The menu includes Chicago-style and Detroit Coney-style hot dogs, Chicago Italian beefs, peanuts, and cracker jacks. The beers will include Strohs, Old Style, Goose Island 312, and Bell’s Two Hearted along with a quality selection of spirits and sodas.”

They’ve now applied for a liquor license with an occupancy load of 60. Hours will be Sunday through Thursday 10 am – 2 am, Friday and Saturday 10 am – 3 am. You can catch more updates on their facebook page here.
