U Street Cafe (from the same owners as Tynan’s Coffee in Columbia Heights) opened up in the former Mocha Hut space back in 2009. Thanks to a couple of readers for sending word about their abrupt closure on U Street Thursday:

“This is awful and sudden news. Any idea why?”

If I had to guess, I’d say The Wydown probably killed them.

Tenleytown is on a roll, relatively. Next up is Bourbon Coffee coming to the corner of Wisconsin and Veazey St, NW next to the Sullivan’s Toy Store. I’m told they could open up as early as this week if all goes well. Bourbon Coffee currently has locations in Foggy Bottom and on Capitol Hill.

Their website says:

“Bourbon Coffee first opened its doors in Kigali, Rwanda in 2007, and has expanded to eight different locations across Rwanda and the United States. We are an international brand of specialty coffee, and the first retail brand to originate from Africa. Our stores are built around the philosophy of producing coffee from “crop to cup” – while sharing our coffee with the world, we are also promoting sustainable practices, economic development, cultural unity, and helping to reshape the global image of Rwanda and its economic development and culture.”

Awesome – and a great addition to the neighborhood.

This building is located at 1665 Wisconsin Avenue, NW. Back in August 2013 I professed my love for The Bean Counter and their back patio.

The property listing says:

“Prime commercial area – commercial + residential zoning (C-2A), very deep lot with potential for significant expansion possibilities – currently successful coffee shop/restaurant – great income potential, second floor living room, full bath and bedroom/storage room, approved plans/permit for expansion convey but need to be updated, transfer of business license is option, sold AS-IS.”

You can see more photos here.

It’s listed at $895,000.

Back in March we learned that Politics & Prose was adding beer and wine options to their coffehouse – an update from the owners:

“The coffeehouse at Politics & Prose has long been a signature attraction of the store, a neighborhood gathering spot for book lovers seeking a great cup of coffee, light fare, and a feeling of community. And now the place is about to get a facelift. In January, we’ll begin a renovation to add more seating, improve the flow, and generally brighten the space.

We’ll have more details in the weeks ahead about some other exciting plans underway for the coffeehouse when it re-opens. But in the meantime we wanted to let customers know that it will be closed beginning January 1 for up to three months. During that period the outdoor entrance into the coffeehouse will not be accessible, so customers coming into the store from the parking lot will need to enter through the back of the Children and Teens Department or through the store’s front door on Connecticut Avenue NW. The Wydown opened up their permanent location back in June 2014. The placard says:

“New restaurant /specialty coffee bar with drip coffee, tea, espresso, fresh juices and house-made baked goods. Also selling coffee equipment. Total Occupancy Load of 35. Sidewalk Café with seating for 4 and standing room for 8.”

So I’ve always been meaning to ask this – does anyone here ever drink a beer, wine or whatever at a coffee bar?
