As Tynan Coffee & Tea marks its first month in business, we want to take this opportunity to say thank you to our guests. We are grateful to receive so much input regarding our new shop.  From the outset, we have sought feedback to improve the customer experience and we appreciate the many thoughtful and constructive comments that we have received.  A number of important points were made in the recent Prince of Petworth posting and the corresponding comments and we would like to update you on our efforts:

Customer Service:  This is an extremely important issue for us and we feel strongly that we have an experienced and friendly staff.  As with any new endeavor our approach is evolving as we attempt to provide an enjoyable experience.  We will continue to work towards providing exceptional service to each and every one of our guests.

Customer Feedback: We encourage all of our guests to provide feedback to us at the [email protected] email address that is posted throughout the shop and on our website (www.tynancoffeeandtea.com ).  We check this account daily and make every effort to respond to each person.  Your input is extremely beneficial to us and we ask that you continue sending your comments and suggestions.

WiFi Policy:  A number of questions have been raised about our internet policy and we apologize for any confusion.  We are very happy to offer free internet service.  In order to provide the strongest signal, we password protect access so that usage is available to only those in our shop.  While guests do need to request a second ticket from a barista when their initial hour expires, we do not require a second purchase.

Based in large measure on guest feedback, we have revised our WiFi policy as follows:

Monday through Friday:  Free service is available all day

Saturday and Sunday: Free service is available from 3pm to close

While we are gratified by how many people enjoy being in our space, we felt compelled and were urged by many of our guests to limit WiFi on the weekends in order to accommodate other customers looking for space to sit and eat.

Lighting: We agree with many of the comments that we received regarding the lighting.  Just last week we replaced all overhead lights with softer bulbs.  We hope the change provides a warmer environment.

We have truly enjoyed becoming a part of the Columbia Heights community and we look forward to continuing to grow and improve.  Our goal is to provide an outstanding customer experience, both through our offerings and the environment that we create in our space.  We sincerely hope that you will stop in for some coffee, tea or food and please do not hesitate to let us know what you think.

I received a great email last night. It’s great timing because I saw a worker on the roof and was wondering if something new was going into this spot. A reader writes:

“I just ran into the owner of a new Coffee House located at Florida & W st. NW. The building has long sent empty and had a nice awning and sign saying “Mocha Lounge”. Since the sign still looks good, he’s going to keep it! He says he’s got a permit for outdoor seating in the good whether and his family has an old western wooden wagon he’s going to keep on the premises. He’s rehabbed the inside and has restored the tin ceiling, and told me he plans to Open in 3-4 weeks. Should be a fun place to hangout!”

Well there’s some good news and some less exciting news. As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, Union City, a coffee brunch diner type spot from the owners of recently opened Tynan Coffee & Tea in Columbia Heights, will fill the northernmost retail spot.

Today, the CricKet sign went up to help cement CricKet’s take over of DC…

And in happier news – Sala Thai will be opening up a Thai and Sushi restaurant. And finally a Subway sandwich shop will be opening. Still no word on whether the spot from former Colorado Kitchen chef Gillian Clark is going forward. More news on the rest of the spaces as deals are signed.

I’m particularly curious what you guys think about the Sala Thai and Subway shops?

“Dear PoP,

Pretty packed for Friday afternoon, lots of laptoppers, pokers and prodders, one of the guys from Starbucks, and even saw the owners of Pete’s Apizza stop in to welcome the Tynan owners.

Clean (well, on opening day one would hope), well stocked, and the staff were friendly. Had an Irish Coffee to set the early start to the weekend off right!”

By the time you’re reading this Tynan Coffee & Tea will be open at 1400 Irving Street, NW in Columbia Heights. I was able to get a sneak preview of the spot Thursday evening while the finishing touches were being completed. They have recently updated their Web site and you can see their menus here. Currently their hours are Monday – Friday 6:30am – 8pm and Saturday – Sunday 8am – 8pm. Those hours could change based on customer demand. In addition to coffee and tea you’ll also have the option of getting beer and wine. There is free Wifi and the seating capacity is 52 indoors. In the warmer months there will be some outdoor seating as well. While Friday is their soft opening on Saturday they will have their grand opening from 8am – 8pm though from 10am – 2pm there will be a sampling of free 8oz brewed coffee so you can check out the spot.

More photos after the jump. (more…)

When I wrote about the IHOP coming to DC USA earlier in the week I mentioned that I had more good news coming. And the good news is some more info about the new spot coming to Petworth from the folks behind Tynan Coffee & Tea opening Friday in Columbia Heights. This spot is coming to Petworth in the retail space of Park Place above the metro. The place in Petworth is not just going to be a coffee spot. I mentioned earlier that it’s going to be in the northernmost retail space near the corner of Georgia and Quincy. There will be some outdoor seating and what has me most excited – breakfast/brunch options.

I mean proper breakfast/brunch options. This has been one of the things I’ve been craving most – a real place to sit down and eat breakfast/brunch in Petworth. Domku does a fine job on Upshur Street but that’s really one of the few options for a hot breakfast.

This spot will tentatively be called Union City and as best I understand will sorta be like a Tryst/Diner type of place. Excuse me a moment while I wipe the tears from my eyes. Ok, sorry bout that. This is phenomenal news that I’ll be following closely. Stay tuned…

Last week a reader sent in a photo of Tynan’s new sign for the spot on Irving Street in the Highland Park complex. I’m told that Tynan will open up Friday or Saturday of next week.

I’ve also been told that Tynan has an official spot in the Park Place complex above the Petworth Metro. They will take over the northern most retail space and will have outdoor seating. I’ll update news on that space as build out occurs.

Oh yeah, back to Columbia Heights. For those anticipating Chipotle’s opening on 14th Street – I’m hearing early December!
