Back in Aug. 2011 a reader shared some scuttlebutt saying Filter Coffeehouse was looking to open a second location in Foggy Bottom. Signage has finally gone up on I St, NW just east of 20th St, NW. Their first store is located in Dupont at 1726 20th St, NW. You can see their coffee menu here.

Below is a peek in the window from their coming soon location in Foggy Bottom. Looks like there will be additional seating upstairs:

113 Rhode Island Ave, NW

On Monday we spoke about the Showtime Lounge coming to 113 Rhode Island Ave, NW in Bloomingdale. At the time one commenter, Colonel K, wrote:

“So one of the best (black) barbershops in the area was closed to make way for a pub for white hipster yuppies. Cheers.”

After I stopped by one of the owners followed up in an email wishing to clarify the situation:

“I noticed in the comments sections that some people were concerned about the predominately African-American frequented barbershop being muscled out to make way for a “gentrified” bar. I’d like to make sure people know that we had nothing to do with the closing of the salon. I was only able to get the space because I’ve lived upstairs from the Showtime for the last five years and got to know the barbers well, so I was able to jump on the opportunity once it was clear that they were closing. They had to close because the owner, who didn’t work there and only rented out the barber chairs, hadn’t paid her rent in months and was getting sued for back rent. So basically, the place was closing no matter what. If anyone would like to visit Ben or Sean or any of the barbers that are no longer there, we’ve posted where they’re working now on the outside of the building.”

Thanks to a reader for sending word that Mayorga Coffee has closed its shop at 314 Carroll St NW in Takoma. The reader hears that Soupergirl could be expanding into this space but that has not been confirmed.

UPDATE: Soupergirl has confirmed they will be expanding into the Mayorga space.

In April 2011 we first learned of Bistro Bohem coming to 1840 6th St, NW (the corner of 6th and Florida Ave, NW.) Well, add this to the pile of amazing transformations hitting DC. I was lucky enough to get an early preview last night and I still haven’t stopped smiling. Not only were the food and drinks amazing but the space itself is super chill. I can see this being a great date spot too. And they had schnitzel – I love schnitzel!

You can see their drink and food menu in pdf below:

Bistro Bohem Menus (PDF)

You’ll soon see an announcement on their Facebook page announcing a preview for the neighborhood tonight from 7-10pm and a grand opening next week.

Oh yeah – this also only part one! They also will be expanding into the former Zee’s restaurant next door at 600 Florida Ave, NW. That expansion which should take place over the next month will feature a coffee cafe featuring Julius Meinl coffee and fresh pastries which, will be open during the day.

It’s just amazing to watch this section of Florida Ave blossom before my eyes. Remember this is what it used to look like not too long ago.

The Woodley Park Starbucks located across from the zoo at 3000 Connecticut Ave, NW is getting a complete reno. While it was closed this past weekend it looks like it’ll be open until 3pm next week:

Back on Jan. 5th we took a pre-preview of Coffy Cafe coming to 3310 14th St, NW in Columbia Heights. The opening date has been pushed back a few times but owner Philecia tells me that she has picked up her business license and will open this Thursday at 7am. You can see their menus here and hours will be:

Mon – Fri: 7am-9pm • Sat: 8am-10pm • Sun: 8am-8pm

And here’s a look at the inside:

Like the way it turned out?

It seems everybody’s expanding coffee operations these days. First came word of Italy Pizza offering Gimme! Coffee, then we learned Blind Dog Cafe opened at Darnell’s and now comes word of Pitango Gelato adding Counter Culture Coffee:

Pitango Gelato is pleased to announce the addition of Counter Culture Coffee to its hot drink line-up. All Pitango baristas go through Counter Culture’s intensive coffee education program, where they acquire in-depth knowledge of brewing techniques with classes such as “Brewing Science” and “Milk Chemistry Lab.”

Pitango’s new coffee menu includes the Italian classics: espresso, cappuccino, latte as well as affogato (espresso served with a scoop of gelato). In addition to the coffee program, Pitango will continue to offer its Italian sipping hot chocolate during the winter months and its full line of classic and seasonal gelatos and sorbets year round.

Pitango Gelato is a local private company with locations in DC’s Penn Quarter, Capitol Hill, Logan Circle.
