“League of American Bicyclists Recognizes Washington, DC as Bike-Friendly Community”

From a press release:

“Mayor Bowser announced that Washington, DC has been named a “Gold” Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists, making the District the largest city on the East Coast to receive the designation.

“As we continue to improve and expand our bike infrastructure and make cycling a dynamic component of our city’s transportation network, this award is a testament to how far the District has come,” said Mayor Bowser. “Through smart investments that are helping us meet the needs of more residents and commuters, we continue to build a safer, stronger DC.”

Washington, DC earned Gold status based on a number of factors, including: the percentage of residents who bike to work (2nd nationally among large cities); the amount of bike lanes, cycletracks, and multi-use trails in the city; and Capital Bikeshare, which has 4,000 bikes at 270 stations in Washington, DC and more than 400 stations throughout the region. The Bike Rack has maintained a long-standing and positive relationship with Bell Sports since opening our doors in 2007. In light of Bell’s recent acquisition by Vista Outdoors and Vista’s relationship with the NRA, it is our position that we must divest our relationship with Bell Sports at this time.

We’ve sold Bell and Giro helmets for over ten years now because those helmets do an excellent job keeping our customers safe. Unfortunately, we believe the NRA is actively making our customers less safe. The values of the NRA are simply incompatible with the values of The Bike Rack, and as such we feel compelled to join the NRA Boycott.

This is a decision we do not take lightly and one we gave a lot of careful and deliberate thought. (more…)

Wrecking bikes has become ‘the new entertainment of underaged individuals,’ the startup says

Hong Kong-based bike-sharing service Gobee is shutting down in France after suffering what the company is calling “mass destruction” of its fleet. Gobee, which had 2,000 bikes in Paris and claimed around 150,000 users across the country, says 3,400 of the company’s bikes have been damaged and more than 1,000 have been stolen, according to The Guardian.”

From MPD on Sunday:

“This evening (6PM), at 3147 Dumbarton St. NW, a woman was accosted by two male juveniles. One of them had a brick and demanded one of the two bicycles in her possession. Instead, the woman yelled for her friend (who was a short distance away) to help her, and the juvenile threw his brick at her. The brick narrowly missed her and the juvenile then picked up a rock. He then threw the rock at her approaching friend, which hit him in the head. The juvenile suspect and her male friend then got into a physical struggle. MPD arrived on the scene and arrested the juvenile suspect. The other juvenile fled the scene before the arrival of MPD. The male friend’s head injury was treated by DCFEMS.

A reader reports Monday night:

“I’ve witnessed two very violent altercations between cyclists and drivers over the course of 1.5 years in DC – in the 1st one, the driver turned his car across two lanes of traffic and pulled a metal baseball bat out of his trunk against a cyclist he had knocked over.

Feb. 19th: I watched a convo between a cyclist in a bike lane on G St and 13th and a driver escalate to him pulling the cyclist off his bike, and beating him up. Thankfully the cyclist had pepper spray, since my screaming at the driver to stop didn’t do anything.

Moral of the story is road rage is real (especially against cyclists), wear a helmet, make sure your photos of license plates are clear, don’t be afraid to use a u-lock in self defense, and maybe carry pepper spray.”

Cyclist Assaulted by “a group of male juveniles” at 5:40pm in Petworth

“On today’s date [Thursday] at 5:40 pm there was an:

Aggravate Assault – CCN: 18- 026-031 – f/o 4014 Georgia Avenue, NW – The complainant reported he was riding his bicycle when he was approached by a group of male juveniles. The juveniles began assaulting the complainant, striking him all over his body causing him to fall to the ground. The juveniles the fled the scene on foot and made good on their escape.

C1 has a contusion to the left eye and swollen facial area, he was transported to a medical facility.

No usable look-out at this time.”
