Thanks to Andy for passing on the sad news about City Bikes Adams Morgan (2501 Champlain St, NW):
“Noticed they updated their Instagram bio to “permanently closed.” Unfortunate to see, I always had great experiences there.”
On their Facebook page they also post a permanent closure as well as noting “On September 21, 2023, City Bikes filed for Chapter 7 liquidation bankruptcy.” Read More

“Dear PoPville,
Thursday, Nov 30 around 2:30 in the afternoon I was on my bicycle crossing through the crosswalk that connects the GW Parkway to the Key Bridge when a car accelerated into me, throwing me to the curb and consequently the hospital. In the chaos that followed, I knew there were witnesses, as one had helped call 911 and retrieve my belongings from the roadway, Read More

For lease signs have gone up on the City Bikes buildings that have been “temporarily” closed since May when we learned about the “death of Charlie McCormick, founder and CEO of City Bikes”.
Anyone know the status of the Adams Morgan location? That space was halved back in 2022.
Updates as we learn more.

Thanks to Joe for sending: “Any idea what this is in the bike lane on Florida Ave NW near the new Whole Foods? It’s on both sides of the street in the bike lanes on Florida Ave NW between the Rhapsody and the Floridian, one block south of the new Whole Foods.”
Update: “It’s a bus island. Allows the bus to stop in the lane instead of pulling to the curb and reduces mixing of buses and bikes.”

“On my way home Tuesday night, I saw a car driving south on the Metropolitan Branch trail. It almost hit several cyclists before it reached a bollard just south of NY Ave and reversed back up to Alethia Tanner Park.”

“Dear PoPville,
Are there different rules for where (in terms of geographic zones, not sidewalk vs traffic lane) one can ride regular versus electric capital bikeshare bikes in the district?
I used to commute daily as a capital bikeshare member, but now that I live in Van Ness, I only use the system on the rare occasion that I feel like chancing my safety on the bike-lane-less CT Ave corridor. This evening I juuuust missed an L2 home after dinner in Adams Morgan, and so I went to the nearest bikeshare station and picked up the only thing available – an e-bike (my first ever ride on one). I then proceeded to stow my phone away safely (notifications silenced) and ride straight up to the docking station across from Bread Furst. I docked the bike with a happy little green light, walked the rest of the way home, and pulled out my phone – which displayed a several-minute-old push notification from the Lyft app that I was “outside the allowed area” (or some such) and needed to return immediately. “Pro tip: You can request a bike rack via @311DCgov and they are very responsive! @DDOTDC requested some follow up information about the location, confirmed the spot it would be placed, and voila a brand new bike rack about 1.5 months later! A great free service to use!”
“Dear PoPville,
The degradation of the Bikeshare system has been building for a couple years now, but the last few months have seen a massive acceleration to that trend to the point this system is becoming completely unusable. There is zero maintenance done by Lyft at this point. Over the last few weeks the majority of the bikes I get are malfunctioning, either with no e-assist from the e-bikes or chain problems on the normal bikes.
And this is when I am lucky to actually find an available bike because there are so many out of commission (not just bikes, but there have been obvious problems with the docks everywhere), Read More
