Wild to see the progress at the corner of 18th and Monroe St, NW. The developer’s Web site says it will become The Schafer and will offer one and two bedrooms from high $200s to low $600s. We’ll make one a Good Deal or Not? when they hit the market.

Here’s what it looked like in Feb. ’08:

Feb. ’08 when I first featured it as a House of the Day:

Rear addition facing alley

We judged this awesome addition from 18th St, NW (south of S St, NW) last year (sorry, I can’t find the link) but a reader just sent an awesome link to some inside shots. Check out these photos from design-milk who also writes:

“Architect David Jameson completed Barcode House in Washington, DC earlier this year. The project entailed creating a freestanding, modern addition to an existing, vertically-oriented urban row house. The extension is composed of a completely see-through, two-story, glass structure in front of a narrow concrete tower. A lyrical pattern of black steel rods that resemble a barcode run across the two glass façades, hence the name”

Awesome!

Back in July ’11 we learned that Meridian Public Charter school would be moving into the old Harrison School at 13th and V St, NW. They got their financing – from a press release:

“The historic Harrison School building has become the next development in Washington, D.C.’s dynamic U Street neighborhood. A $15.5 million renovation adds 12,000 square feet to the existing 49,000 square foot structure to serve hundreds of families and 530 children from early childhood through eighth grade at Meridian Public Charter School.

Meridian Chairman Ron Ridker explained the school’s commitment to the U Street area. “The Manhattan Laundry building has served us very well since our inception twelve years ago. We could have found a good permanent home for Meridian in other parts of the city, but waited until an appropriate building close to our current location came along, so we could continue serving the community we grew up with. The Manhattan Laundry space will soon be available for other uses.”

Primary funding for Meridian’s new home was provided through TRF’s Chase New Markets Tax Credit Charter School Fund, created in partnership with The Reinvestment Fund (TRF) and Chase. A fifty-year lease signed with the District of Columbia, construction began this week at 13th and V Streets, N.W. for completion in August of 2012.

In addition to its premier financing partners, Meridian has assembled a top team: Forrester Construction, Bowie Gridley Architects, Building Hope, and Brailsford & Dunlavey.”

What do you think of the addition renderings? You can see how the property looks now from the front here.

Check out the Brixton starting to take shape at 9th and U St, NW. The Brixton is of course one the projects from the Hilton brothers (Marvin, Gibson, Blackbyrd etc.) On that note I visited Chez Billy’s coming to Petworth and all I’m gonna say is that even in it’s skeletal shape – well it blew me away. Stay tuned on both fronts… Actually one more front, I passed The Independent also from the Hilton brothers coming to 715 Florida Ave, NW and major construction has been accomplished there as well.

From a press release:

“ZGF Architects LLP, a nationally recognized architecture, planning and interior design firm, has been selected to design a new Class A office building at 1200 Seventeenth Street NW. Akridge, a comprehensive DC-based commercial real estate firm, and First Potomac Realty Trust, a leading owner of office and industrial properties in the greater Washington region, selected ZGF as part of a design competition among five firms.

The current 85,000 SF building, located on the corner of Rhode Island Avenue NW in downtown Washington, was built in 1964 and houses the National Restaurant Association. The building sold in 2011 to a partnership of Akridge and First Potomac Realty Trust. It will be demolished next year to make room for a larger, more sustainable development.

“ZGF brings outstanding credentials in design, and particularly in green building, to this project,” said Akridge President Matthew J. Klein. “Their knowledge and talents will be key to making 1200 Seventeenth the trophy we’ve envisioned.”

The new 170,000 SF speculative office building has 11 floors of office space, street-level retail, and amenities such as a roof deck and a fitness center. The design anticipates a LEED Platinum certification. Underground parking will be designed to hold 115 vehicles. The site is within the Golden Triangle Business Improvement District.”
