The music of Native American people inspired a unique style of classical music known as the “Indianist” movement, and on October 16 the National Cathedral will host a concert with PostClassical Ensemble showcasing their groundbreaking adaptations.

U.S. Representative Deb Haaland (D-N.M.), the first Native American woman to preside over the U.S. House of Representatives, is scheduled to make introductory remarks, followed by music and dancing. Included in the program are performances from the Lakota Music Project and the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, singing and drumming by Emmanuel Black Bear, and powerful invocations by tribal elder Chris Eagle Hawk.

Organized and performed by the PostClassical Ensemble and conducted by Ángel Gil-Ordonez, performances will include Shakamaxon for string orchestra and Resolution from Standing Bear, both by Jerod Tate, a Chickasaw composer and pianist whose work draws on American Indian history and culture. Curt Cacioppo’s Five North American Indigenous Songs for a cappella chorus will also see its D.C. debut.

Tickets are available here.

The “Native American Inspirations” program takes place Wednesday, October 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Washington National Cathedral. Tickets range from $10 for students to $25-$65.

Step right up for Friends of the National Zoo’s adults-only Halloween dance party featuring curiosities, grotesques and beastly good fun: Night of the Living Zoo, sponsored by Groupon, on October 25 at Smithsonian’s National Zoo.

Oh, and no big deal, but you could be the lucky winner of a cool $1,000 for your costuming efforts.

Err on the lazy side, costume-wise? (A beret and a penciled-on mustache, anyone?) You’ll still have a blast at this dark-carnival-themed party. Epic street performers — including a sword swallower, a fire eater, living statues, magicians and stilt walkers — will be on hand to thrill guests. Combine that with special appearances from some creepy (and amazing) creatures, and you’ve got a Halloween event that can’t be beat in the DMV.

Trucks will sell food to pair with craft beer and wine. There will be dancing, live-band karaoke and of course, that glorious costume competition, which is sponsored this year by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: remodeling sucks!

With the holidays right around the corner, there is no better time to start that long-awaited bathroom or kitchen upgrade before holiday stress sets in.

In fact, 75% of remodelmate customers in the Washington D.C. area believe it is important for them to renovate their homes before the holidays, with 75% of them likely to do so.

That’s why we’re bringing back a PoPville favorite: $500 off our exclusive Concierge service, just before the holidays.

A three-mile stretch of Georgia Avenue NW will become the scene of the District’s first ever Open Streets event on Saturday, October 5 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

The free, family-friendly event, hosted by Mayor Muriel Bowser and the District Department of Transportation, offers a rare, vehicle-free avenue through Northwest Washington that is ideal for an hour-long fitness class, dog walk and window-shopping at local businesses, between Barry Place NW to Missouri Avenue NW.

The event aims to inspire participants to think differently about how we use our streets and promote community and healthy activity for all ages and abilities.

To make the traffic-free corridor even better, there will be entertainment stations along the way, including a climbing wall, motorized scooter clinics, bike tune-ups, a skateboarding ramp, kids “traffic garden,” and fitness classes including yoga, Zumba, kickboxing, CrossFit and more. Local businesses are also planning their own “Open Streets” inspired events and specials along the route.

In his job as a lead web developer for the U.S. Mint, Nathan Wallace makes a point of listening closely to his clients. Then he goes a step further.

“Sometimes, what they need is not what they’re asking for,” said Wallace, a graduate of the Georgetown University Master’s in Technology Management program. “Really, just listening for what they need is sometimes more important.”

For Wallace, that means not just listening, but learning to empathize and make the customer’s needs your own. It requires a special awareness and the kind of communication skills not typically taught in technology classes. And, increasingly, it’s what employers are looking for in new college graduates, particularly those in the STEM fields.

In a recent survey by Morning Consult, hiring managers and HR professionals put a premium on these “soft skills,” with 74 percent saying listening skills are valuable, 70 percent noting attention to detail and 69 percent citing effective communication.
