Hi PoPville readers! I’m Kristen Menichelli (she/her), and I’m a kitchen and bath designer.

My company, Green House Designs, was started to fulfill a need within the interior design world — providing homeowners with healthy design that’s sustainably and responsibly sourced.

Seven years ago, I transitioned from a career in theatrical design to home remodeling. As I worked with clients, I began to think more about the environmental and human impact of commonly used building materials. From the working conditions in granite mines to the sustainability of wood flooring options, the choices we make can have a major impact.

That’s why I work with my clients to give them the full picture, empowering them to make informed decisions.

Our homes are more important than ever, especially while we stay home to #flattenthecurve. My goal as a designer is to help clients create spaces that are beautiful, welcoming, and functional. This includes helping clients customize their homes to address specific needs, ranging from mobility issues to allergies.

Over the past week thousands of coaches, personal trainers and instructors have lost their jobs in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

At the same time even more people are left without a way to workout, relieve stress and stay healthy. In an effort to support local coaches financially while giving them a platform to still serve the people, SWEAT DC has launched a new virtual platform, SWEAT Anywhere (check out pics and videos on their Instagram).

Members on the platform will receive access to 60+ workouts including HIIT, barre, sculpt, bootcamp, yoga, dance, meditation (we need it more than ever), mindfulness, nutrition & more.

The workouts are streamed live so you can follow along and even live chat with the coaches during the workout (think TRL live song requests). All workouts are recorded and stay on the platform for 30 days after the workout so members can do the workouts at their leisure.

Author Bio: Kerry O’Grady is the Faculty Director and Associate Professor of Practice for the Georgetown University Master’s in Public Relations & Corporate Communications. An award-winning integrated communicator, she is a sought-after media contributor on pop culture, social media, and wellness. She’s currently a doctoral candidate at Vanderbilt University, studying for her Ed.D. in leadership and learning in organizations.

As a public relations professional, I’m not a fan of articles that detail the latest “trends” in a profession.

By definition, trends are flighty; forgettable. They are a general direction of change, but not certain or absolute. The start of any new year should be about getting back to basics; redefining and developing the skills you know.

Here are my top three skills for evergreen career success:

Writing

Public relations is a writing-centric profession. As a PR professional, you’re the go-to expert on the written word. You’re not only an expert in how to craft messaging but also a master at disseminating it to key publics to change both hearts and minds.

Writing should be concise and simple, each word carefully selected with intention. The best news about writing well? Every day is an opportunity to improve.

For many, the impulse to join a carpool is quickly squashed by various “what ifs.”

What if our driver needs to stay late? What if there’s a family emergency? What if our driver is suddenly ill?

Consequently, the would-be carpooler imagines they would be late picking up kids at school and day care; late for dinner at home; late for post-work club meetings; late for fitness trainer appointments; late for everything people count on us for once the work day is done.

Valid reasons all, but Commuter Connections has the answer: Commuter Connections members have a free ride home four times a year when their regular carpool or vanpool driver has to cancel. That’s four times a year the Guaranteed Ride Home program rescues the commuter and gets them to where they are going.
