Located at 2608 Georgia Ave, ShowOff Apparel, is one of the coolest spots in town. I spoke with head artist, Edmund “VJ” Sanyeneh and his associate Joseph. They are unbelievably cool artists. They paint old sneakers, murals, clothes, stools, trucks, you name it. You can bring in an old pair of sneakers and they’ll paint them for $60 (photos after the jump). They have been at this location for around a year and were recently featured on local NBC news. In addition to the cool wares, the store itself is surrounded by incredibly painted murals. This is a store that you should really check out simply to appreciate the art. Lots of photos after the jump. (more…)

It seems like ages since the beautification projects at 14th and Park have supposed to get started. Mayor Fenty had a press conference this morning and sent out the following press release. Do you think they’ll actually stick to this timetable? A public park and fountain does sound pretty sweet though, yeah?

Fenty Announces Implementation of Columbia Heights Public Realm Plan

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and city officials unveiled a plan to begin
preliminary work on the Columbia Heights Public Realm plan. The project,
developed by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), represents a
culmination of several years of community meetings that centered on a
framework of landscape and transportation improvements in public areas
surrounding recent neighborhood development. The plan will focus on
coordinating high-quality improvements to foster a unified community
identity for Columbia Heights.

We are extremely excited to finally begin work in Columbia Heights, said
Mayor Fenty. We recognize the vast amount of time the community has
invested in this project and we look forward to implementing the public
realm plan and our continued partnership with the community.

The project will be rolled out in two phases. Phase One will focus on the
area surrounding the intersection of 14th Street and Park Road, NW. The
centerpiece of Phase one involves the completion of a public park featuring
a unique fountain and public gathering venue.
(PoP’s emphasis) The plan also calls for
reconstruction and paving of roads and sidewalks, and the installation of
new lighting and street furniture. Phase two of the project will focus on
infrastructure and streetscape improvements on 14th Street, NW between
Columbia Road and Newton Street, NW. Release continues after the jump. (more…)

Hey Prince…long time reader, first time with a question!

I was curious about the Old Soldier’s Home Golf Course. Is it completely cut off from the public? I have lived right next to it since I moved to DC and hardly ever see anyone on it (compared to a real golf course, certainly). I just got back into golf and would love to have a course so close!

Thanks…Geoff

Dear Geoff,

You have discovered one of the greatest secrets of Petworth – we have our own golf course! You are in luck. You have to be a member but luckily memberships are open to the public. I was a member a few years ago but then I started blogging and I wasn’t golfing enough so I let my membership lapse. Back then dues were $300 a year but now I think dues are $400 or so, which is pretty damn cheap when it comes to golf memberships. You can find more info here. It is a nine hole course that is mix of par 3s and 4s. I never once had to wait for a tee time when I was a member. Veterans of the Old Soldiers Home are frequently golfing as well. That is a huge perk. They are unbelievably nice and hella good golfers. Funny story: I was golfing with a buddy of mine and this 80 year old woman veteran was in the group ahead of us. So I said to my buddy, Oh lord, this is going to be a long day. Meanwhile she hit every single shot dead straight 100 yards. While I spent half my time in the trees looking for my horrible shots. Just goes to show you. If you do become a member, you can take guests along with you and the cost is only about $15 or $20 for the guest. And there is a driving range too! So all in all this a great benefit. Just become a member. You can call (202) 730-3050 to find out how.

Cheers,
PoP

Be careful if you are biking down 11th Street even if you are in the designated bike lane.  From a reader:

8:10 this morning I came upon a bicyclist sprawled on the street, unconscious on the block South of Florida.  About 6 people were around him directing traffic away.  A white Aspire car was in the street, probably involved in the accident.  I was told an ambulance had been called. The bicyclist was not bleeding from the mouth.

It is my thought that the car forced the bike into a parked car.  That corner is quite dangerous (11th at the block South of Florida) because bikes are forced into parked cars as the lanes squeeze down, losing the bike lane that is present on the blocks North of Florida.  Also if the light is green, bikes enjoy quite a fast run down that stretch and cars are irritated by the bikes’ presence as the lanes constrict.”

Ulah Bistro located at 1214 U Street always seems to be busy when I walk by. Has anyone checked it out yet?

Looks like they have a good 3 course dinner special Monday and Tuesday evenings for $29.95.  I’m intrigued by the mojito chicken.

The reader aptly titled his email message to me “Not sure what to make of this…”. I’m with you there. You can see in the back towards the fence between the garbage can and recycle can there is a tombstone! Beyond bizarre. How the hell does a tombstone wind up in someone’s alley?

I love walking by the Emma Mae Gallery on 14th Street just north of U. There are always the coolest posters and photographs from back in the day. I really liked this one because the joint was located at 3642 Georgia Ave. It’s not hard to imagine Lorenzo Hall and his trio bringing down the house. Hopefully, there will be a comparable Billy Banks Ringside Inn gracing Georgia Ave in the near future.
