Fairly normal rowhouse with a bold paint job. Too bright or rock and roll?

This is one of my favorites on T Street just west of 14th Street. Even though it’s old school it has a cool quality. I can’t tell if I’m overreacting or if it really is super cool. Do you dig it?

A reader posted this great article from the Post yesterday. The article is titled “Changes on 14th Street NW Bring Challenges for Mom-and-Pop Shops” and starts:

“One of the Washington area’s oldest Central American commercial strips consists of about a dozen blocks of storefront pupusarías, beauty salons, check-cashing depots and Latin variety stores along 14th Street NW, north of Park Road. Many of these mom-and-pop businesses cater to the neighborhood’s immigrants, but that formula may have to change as the area rapidly gentrifies, business owners in the area say.”

We then learn at the bottom of the article:

“(Marleny Flores) plans to open a cafe called Sweetime Bakery on the bottom floor of her building in the fall. She plans to offer freshly baked Central American goods, Bolivian tea, health shakes and more. By next summer, she hopes to have a full patio up and running, she said.”

I think it sounds amazing, yeah?

This house located at 1919 17th St NW looks pretty sweet. It’s also really close to U Street, Adams Morgan and Dupont. The sign says 3 bedroom/2 bathroom duplex and totally renovated. The price is $3,500 + utilities. Good rental deal or not?

The Web site, World Changing, talks about Urban Design and Transportation and under Community talks about “Health / Education / Empowering Women / Philanthropy Social Entrepreneurship / Arts and Culture” plus lots more. It is awesome and good lunch time reading.

The following comes from their manifesto:

“Worldchanging is a solutions-based online magazine that works from a simple premise: that the tools, models and ideas for building a better future lie all around us. That plenty of people are working on tools for change, but the fields in which they work remain unconnected. That the motive, means and opportunity for profound positive change are already present. That another world is not just possible, it’s here. We only need to put the pieces together.”

They actually have a really good Web site. It says:

“The Potter’s House is Washington’s original church coffeehouse with a bookstore, art gallery, restaurant, discussion center, entertainment venue, catering service, and gift shop. We offer community, hospitality, and a listening ear to all who enter. We are thankful for all of the wonderful people with whom God has blessed us through the years. We want to consistently share the vision that we are all clay in the Potter’s hands.”

There were a lot of religious books but there were also “normal” books as well like The Kite Runner and Suite Francaise. There was also a band there and new art was getting hung on the wall. I’m not particularly religious myself, nor am I of the Church going persuasion but I felt completely fine looking around. They also had a very reasonably priced Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner menu. And there is free wireless available. Of additional note, they also have a Friday night benefit concert series beginning at 7pm with a $15 suggested donation. You can find more info on the concert series here. Potter’s House is located at 1658 Columbia Road, NW and a flyer I picked up says “all ages, races, creeds, sexes & orientations welcome!”.

Pictures of the inside after the jump. (more…)

In the almost two years of writing this blog I’ve only had a couple of frightening encounters. I wrote about the first time here. Well, in getting the material for this blog I generally walk between 10-15 miles over the weekends. During those walks I’ve pretty much gotten to “know” most of the corner boys along my usual routes. So I was stunned when in broad daylight I was accosted by some corner boys. It was in an area between Columbia Heights and Petworth but one that I’ve walked hundreds of times. So, I notice a house that I thought might make a “good deal or not?” post. I take out my note pad and write down the address. Simple enough. Well, apparently, a corner boy thought I was a narc or something because he comes flying over to me yelling “what are you writing!?! what do you got in that book!?!”. I’m happy to say I didn’t shit myself. I was surprisingly quite calm given that there were about 6 other corner boys a few steps behind the “leader” questioning me. Anyway, I calmly say, “you see that house over there for sale? I’m writing down the address so I can look it up when I go home.” The corner boy looks at the book that I’m holding and sees the address I had just written was indeed the address of a house for sale. Then the funniest thing in the world happened. He became nice as hell, no, he practically became a real estate agent. I guess once he realized I wasn’t a threat, he says “oh that’s a great house, you should check it out, go knock on the door…”. It was quite the change of tone I can assure you. I guess there is a lesson in here somewhere…
