A reader suggested I feature this home a couple of weeks ago. It is located at 1207 Lamont Street. The flyer says:

“Home was gutted & expanded, keeping 3 walls. Now all brand new with sophisticated contemporary design and materials. 2-level unit provides 1,850 sq. ft. of dramatic styling & features marble, granite, maple hardwood flooring, all new stainless appliances and front load washer/dryer. Great location-Walk to 2 Metros, shops, restaurants, & new DC USA Center. Parking included.”

It is divided into two units with unit #2 featuring 3 beds and 3.5 baths. More info and photos can be found here. It seems to have been on the market for over 90 days. The price is for unit #2 is $575,000. Good deal or not?

Unit #1 looks even sweet with a roof deck. The flyer for this unit says:

“Rowhome was gutted & expanded, keeping 3 walls. Now all new 2+levels with dramatic contemporary design, upscale materials include granite, marble, maple hardwood flooring, stainless appliances, parking included! 1,932 sq. ft. with 3 bedrooms & 3 full baths. Exciting glass ceiling and roof deck–great views!”

More details and photos including roof deck photos can be found here. This unit is going for $699,000. The location seems great. What do you think about this unit – good deal or not?

Cool Hand Luke is one of my all time favorite movies. The photo above is from when Paul Newman is about to be beat to a pulp but refuses to stop fighting until the stronger opponent gives up. This will make sense in a moment.

So I encounter a sight unfortunately way too common. A car slows down and deliberately drops some garbage out of the window. Now previously I would just get really angry and let the hatred build. I don’t know what happened to me this time but I simply walked over, smiled, picked up the trash (plastic cups) and went on my way. I figure the only way to win is to be relentless and not let it show that it bothers you. I imagine it’s how Lukas Jackson would respond. I pledged to myself at that moment that I will react in exactly the same way when similar incidents arise. Sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand…

I have to admit that for all the years I’ve lived in and around DC, last year was the first time I’d ever been to the US National Arboretum. Sure, I’d driven by on my way out of town, but frankly, I wasn’t ever quite sure what went on in there, or why I’d want to go until a friend took me to azalea gaze last spring. Since then, I’ve found it’s the perfect place to take the pooch for a walk, sit under a tree and read, or aimlessly meander to clear my head. Unlike many of you, I’m not much of a horticultural buff/gardener, and my front “yard” more closely resembles something you’d see at Sing Sing than something you’d see in an English garden. So I don’t pretend to go and study up on varietals or things of that sort. I go because I can always find a quiet spot, something new to look at and maybe, just maybe some of that gardening stuff might sink in.

While the Azalea Collections are certainly the stars of the show when they’re blooming, I’m apt to say that the tulips, daffodils and crocuses a little earlier in the Spring are my favorites. Going in August though (not the best time of year for catching anything in full bloom) opened my eyes to the idea of the Arboretum as a year-round destination. Fern Valley provided a nice shady walk for the pup and I (beware the rather large frogs that call the stream in Fern Valley home; they scared my dog causing her to slide into the water which caused quite a ruckus among the other critters calling the Valley home). Apologies for the gratuitous photo of my dog. Story continues with lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

This is from the Kazakhstan Embassy. The monument is titled “the monument of independence of Kazakhstan”. Sweet.

Never thought I’d write a title like that, but it’s true yeah?

Thanks to a reader for the heads up. The picture of what it will look like seems pretty amazing. I thought I read on the Columbia Heights News Forum that someone said a 7-11 will go into the retail slot. I have no confirmation on that at all. Has anyone else heard that?

A number of people have written me asking who I’m supporting.  At first I was going to sit this election out but what the hell.  For what it’s worth, I’m supporting Muriel Bowser for Ward 4 City Council.  I’ve been impressed with her energy and ideas for the abbreviated term.  I’m very interested to see what she can accomplish in a full term.

The only other seat I’ll note is for Shadow Senator.  I’m supporting Paul Strauss.  I’ve known Strauss for a number of years now and he is a tireless advocate for DC statehood.  It’s hard to imagine anyone else in this unpaid position will devote as much time and energy as Strauss will and has already.

So whoever you decide to vote for just make sure you get out and vote!

More for the art deco lovers. (This is the one from 16th Street.)
